Can artificial light damage mask?
Can artificial light damage mask?
Sorry for the silly question but, can artificial light (i.e. a lamp) damage parts of a CPAP mask?
Here is what happened: Yesterday I went to sleep and put on my Resmed P10 that I have been using for a few days short of a full year.
Soon enough I had to take off my mask as I was not getting enough air and, even worse, exhaling was quite a chore.
Tried again for a few times and, then decided to try and check and clean the cushion and diffuser.
I realized that the diffuser part was a bit black. At first I though it was full of dust, although it didn't make sense. It's not dust; it really look like if it had been heated.
Lucky enough I had purchased a spare P10 a while back (the insurance only covers new stuff every 12 months).
This morning, as I was doing my usual routine of taking off my mask, and putting it on my night table, I realized that, for the past week, I have been turning my table lamp on upon waking up (it's darker than it used to in the morning). I left the lamp on for the entire day.
The way I put my mask on the desk, with the headstrap dangling from the side, the diffuser is directly in sight of the light, about a foot above.
So, I'm really curious; is such an exposure enough to "burn" the P10 diffuser? I can't think this is normal "wear"...
Thanks in advance.

Re: Can artificial light damage mask?
No....your lamp isn't the cause of the dark discolorations on the P10 vent diffuser area.
I had that happen a while back and my P10 was never exposed to artificial or natural light.

Ok, thanks... weird that I had not noticed any degradation before, at least not to the point I wasn't able to breathe with it anymore.

You're supposed to clean the mesh on a regular basis, with dishwashing soap and an old toothbrush.

Re: Can artificial light damage mask?
to add to what palerider said, a water flosser works very well for this.
(tip of the hat to forum friend chunkyfrog)
just be sure you use it in the shower as that pulsing water can bounce off the mesh and go everywhere!

Re: Can artificial light damage mask?
I used to simply wash it by hand and under running water with dish soap; didn't realize it needed a tootbrush action or something like it.
I will try that and see if I can get it usable for a little longer. Although I had a backup and I can renew my stuff later this week... Just need to decide on replacement. I like the P10 but, might want to try the N20, N30 or Evora..
Thanks everyone; I know more now than yesterday!

The water flosser works quite well, as does a fizzy denture tablet--
---But it takes a lot of rinsing to get the minty smell out.

Re: Can artificial light damage mask?
If you happen to have one, an ultrasonic cleaner is great for cleaning things like mask parts.Just fill with water, add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid, drop in the parts and turn it on. A quick rinse afterwards and you're done.
Really vibrates the dirt out of holes and crevices.
I happen to have a cheap one purchased many years ago. I think that Harbor Freight has one for ~$80.

However, don't buy the one that looks like someone took the harbor freight one and doubled (or more) the price after slapping "CPAP" on it.

There's one for "only" 380 on amazon, or the smaller one for $289.
The one at Harbor Freight for $80 would probably work just as well.
