How to Avoid Smashed Face Syndrome?

Long term CPAP use has been shown to cause "smashed face syndrome", maxillary retrusion resulting in a shortened facial profile and a worsening of apnea. How can this be avoided? Are nasal pillows a safer bet than nasal masks or full face masks that lie over top of the face? Would a nasal pillow mas...

Re: Are these obstructive events?

No, they are not! "Clear Airway" means no obstruction was detected, and the presumption is that they are central (as in "Central Nervous System") events. You're looking at the wrong things you goon. I'm talking about the flowrate flatlines that precede those swj centrals. I want to hear from paleri...

Do RERAs = UARS?

Are respiratory effort related arousals the only measure used by sleep labs to diagnose UARS? If my sleep clinic measures RERAs to diagnose UARS and tells me that I don't have UARS, is that reliable? Or does UARS involve subtler breathing limitations that most clinics cannot detect? Basically, if my...

no apnea, no UARS - still having classic symptoms

18 year old male, untreated AHI of 7.5. I've been on CPAP the last seven months to treat my mild sleep apnea. Treatment has had no effect whatsoever. Can't speak, write, paint, drum, or care for myself. Lethargic as shit, anxious as hell. Falling asleep everywhere, unable to think or plan or affect ...

Re: 6 months into perfect therapy - just as tired

If you can afford to, I’d recommend a trip to Mayo Clinic. I had a difficult to diagnose issue with dizziness that other doctors had no idea about. 1 week of seeing numerous specialists at Mayo and they had me diagnosed, and 3 weeks after I got home with treatment I was better. This was after 6 mon...

Re: 6 months into perfect therapy - just as tired

There is a difference between ruling out and not capturing evidence of the presence of the varying things that might show up during a sleep study. A condition is reliably ruled out only when worst case scenarios were captured during the testing. Just because something wasn't revealed during the tes...

"followup" study I had did include PAP Get a copy of the summary of this study. It's usually one to two pages long. Let's discuss it. It would be good if you would remove the identification and post a copy here. I'll see what I can do. I can remember it ruling out UARS, restless leg syndrome, and e...

extremely vivid dreams People who are sleeping well don't often remember dreams. So, "extremely vivid dreams" is an indication you are not sleeping well. Do you take any drugs or supplements? What about caffeine - even moderate amounts in chocolate? Melatonin supplements? No drugs. I usually have o...

Re: 6 months into perfect therapy - just as tired

You feel like you are sleep deprived and your AHI is low thanks to PAP. A low AHI does not guarantee sound sleep. I would have a sleep study with PAP so that the quality of your sleep can be fully assessed (stages of sleep, arousals, …). Oh yeah, if it wasn't clear that "followup" study I had did i...

6 months into perfect therapy - just as tired

I'm an 18 year old male who starting presenting symptoms of sleep apnea at 16, and have been treated "successfully" with CPAP for the last six months. Awhile ago I dialed in my pressure settings (17-20 cm/H2O; maybe a little excessive, but it's comfortable and puts me at ease), found leak-free nasal...

Re: Are my flow limitations cause for concern? (PLEASE reply!)

I have already exhausted my replies to this person. I ran out of ideas and the ones I had he didn't care for. As for these latest reports...I have no idea if they (the FLs) are responsible for OP's problems or not. And he has already been told that for a UARS definitive diagnosis that a sleep study...

Re: Are my flow limitations cause for concern? (PLEASE reply!)

Since it would appear that you have Central (or possibly mixed) sleep apnea, you should probably be on BiPAP. Also, since you're almost at machine capacity, I suggest that you need a BiPAP in case you have to go higher. However, before you try that, make sure that you really need such high pressure...
