Re: NHS Do they offer neck braces for sleep apnea?

Hi Topcat , Er, you do realise that this forum is based in America? And while it has global reach, and a fair number of posters from all around the world, the predominance of members live in the US? Me, I live in Gloucestershire, and I was a medical journalist before I retired. As to your question, ...

Re: Help please.....in the UK

Hi Nite nite , While others are posting about making adjustments to treatment, this is a few points about the paperwork and the practicalities. I live in the UK. 1. Is the letter you have a copy of the one which the sleep-medicine department is obliged to send to your GP? Or is it a simpler letter s...

Re: Just diagnosed with Apnea, not sure if it's really apnea

Hi Ric28 , To help with diagnosis, I have sent you, as a private message on this forum, the text of an HVS questionnaire which was compiled by two Dutch researchers back in the 1980s. It is 'standardised' – meaning that it was given to a group of patients who had already been identified as clearly h...

Re: Just diagnosed with Apnea, not sure if it's really apnea

Hello again, Ric28 , Most of the time no one symptom suggests or indicates anything. The suggestion of hyper-ventilation comes when there's a cluster of symptoms. What I noticed is that you mentioned at least eight from the list that Dr Lum compiled and has made available to his fellow doctors in pa...

Re: Just diagnosed with Apnea, not sure if it's really apnea

Hi Ric28 , When you say: "Are my symptoms sleep apnea related or is it most likely something else?" I think you are right. As far as I can see, you are asking about three conditions: (1) mild to moderate sleep apnea, (2) slight but possibly significant nasal obstruction, and (3) hyper-ventilation sy...

Re: Central Apnea...in the NHS medical care system

Hi Pedrx , I'm writing to you from the UK, and I have a bit of knowledge about the system. From a common-sense PoV, this doesn't look to me like heart disease. The apneas are so bunched together. In my layman's understanding, if it were heart failure, both obstructives and centrals would more likely...

Re: Should I be concerned?

Hi Stormdudley#22 , I note that you say it is while you are awake. :) It could be several things. As a quick-and-ready test for heart and lung, can you climb two flights of stairs, each with a good 15 or 16 steps, and still hold a normal conversation at the top of them? If you can't, then certainly ...

Re: How do I remove redness from lower lip/chin after using a full face mask?

Hi BatmanMatt , If there is no itching, no blistering, no swelling, or no clear liquid oozing from broken skin, then it's unlikely you have an allergy or an infection. So ... the best thing is to think like a girl – and dab witch hazel on to the red areas for five minutes in the morning. Witch hazel...

If I may take up a little of your time ... 1. In the course of six days, Lars has started five threads, the first one on Wednesday, 22nd December. I note that in that first thread, ChicagoGranny sez to Lars : (a) "You can get good help from the forum if you use OSCAR and post a typical Daily Details...

Re: What exactly is a "flow limitation" ?

Lars , I don't think palerider is being an asshole. His is a perfectly reasonable request – one which is primarily for your benefit. Think again about what you said a day or so ago – all this high-quality help you are getting for free vs the scant amount you've gotten from the doctors I assume you ...

Re: What exactly is a "flow limitation" ?

The definition of an apnea or a hypopnea is a flow which is reduced or absent for 10 seconds or more. It can be much more than that. I once found a two-minute apnea in my charts. With that definition being 'the first axiom', it follows that 'flow limitations' is used to label events shorter than 10 ...

Lars,

Re: First OSCAR data

The machine looks at the air flow in a moving four-minute window. Based on what it 'sees' – and the algorithms it has been programmed with – it either changes the pressure up, changes the pressure down, or does nothing. When it does change, it is usually with one step of 1.5 cm at a time. In additio...

Re: CPAP specifically for PVCs?

Hello lars – for the second time today. You said: and I'll post some data from OSCAR shortly. If you had posted your OSCAR results here, I might have saved myself some time. :) From what you say about – for example – pCO2, you don't need me to explain the parameters of breathing to you. My suggestio...
