Re: POLL: Weight gain/loss and cpap therapy
I think an interesting question is: does obesity worsen the symptoms of sleep apnea? Based on my own experience, I have to wonder about the following situation: A 150-lb marathon runner and a 300-lb couch potato both have equally bad flow limitations/obstructions while they sleep. Who would have the...

Re: Losing weight really is the best long term solution
Don't mind me, I guess I'm just bitter. Nine years ago I was 175 lbs, but my energy levels started declining and my ability to exercise started to wane. I ended up putting on 140 extra pounds. I fought it. I tried to diet and exercise. It was a long losing battle. And doctor after doctor said "you n...

Very well said "alnhwrd". I wish I was as eloquent and calm as you.
I consider the attitude that "sleep apnea is a fat person's disease" to be as backwards and damaging as the attitude that "AIDS is a gay person's disease" and these kinds of posts really push my buttons.

Re: Losing weight really is the best long term solution
My tongue and palate is obese and flabby. I'm trying to re-shape my throat with the following routine:
20 tongue crunches/day
20 tongue presses/day
20 tongue curls/day

Re: Results
It's not always easy to quantify how "bad" OSA is. For instance, this reports says that your AHI is 17 in this test, and supposedly an AHI of 17 isn't "severe". But if you look at the graphs, there are periods where you are OK, and periods where your oxygen levels and pulse are getting hammered ! Th...

Re: Weight Gain
I gained ~135 pounds over the last several years before realizing I had sleep apnea. There's no doubt in my mind that I had sleep apnea before I was obese, and that the sleep apnea was a major contributor to my weight gain. So I was really hoping my weight would fall off easily after going to CPAP.....

Re: installing encore pro on windows vista ultimate
I'm successfuly running Encore Pro on Windows Vista Ultimate, but I've already forgotten how I got it running (gotta love that OSA memory loss). I'm pretty sure it was something in this thread that let me get it installed: http://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40234&st=0&sk=t&sd=a I never succ...

Re: New Pressure Setting -- feels like aerophagia
I'm no doctor, but I can tell you what I would do. My first question would be... do I really need that much pressure? If I felt OK in the 10-13 range, I would reset my BiPAP down more towards that lower pressure range and then slowly walk the pressure up every couple nights until the aerophagia star...

Re: Feel like i have come to the end
I need a pressure of around 12 to really fix my sleep apnea. But my stomach has a problem with pressures that are much above 10. So for me, an APAP set at 10-12 worked out quite well. I spend large portions of the night at 10, but climb up to 12 for short periods during REM sleep. Overall, I average...

Re: do you keep your machine plugged in all the time?
I have machine and heated hose plugged into a power strip. I turn the strip off in the morning when I wake up and turn it back on when I jump in bed at night. I've taken the smart card out (and replaced it) when the machine was both on and off. No problems yet...

Review: GoWear fit armband (sleep efficiency?)
I thought I'd throw up a quick review on this site of the "GoWear fit" armband (aka BodyBugg) from BodyMedia. The reason I mention it here is because they are advertising that it will measure "sleep efficiency", so I thought it might be of interest to some of the data hounds. This type of device is ...

Re: Zeo Personal Sleep Coach?
I would hope that some company could make a wireless EEG-like headband and sell it without labeling it a medical device (and jumping through tons of regulatory hoops). Hell, as far as I'm concerned that's less "medical" and less dangerous than an anal thermometer! In both EEG and themometer cases yo...

Re: Zeo Personal Sleep Coach?
Ditto, to the jnk and cinco777. Some of us that have sleep issues and are very proactive have probably heard ALL the coaching tips about good sleep hygiene. But for some of us who still have issues, it's data we crave. I know I've been very interested in assembling my own EEG and EOG for monitoring ...
