Re: Pro & Con of keeping follow-up Sleep Dr appts

Here's where you have to learn to be your own advocate. Why 6 months? Why not 1 year? Don't limit this just to your sleep doctor. Ask all your medical people including dentist, eye doc. etc. So few people do question the frequency of follow-up that medical professionals are often surprised when you ...

Re: Intense Sleep Inertia/Sleeping 9+ hrs on CPAP?

I see. What's usually a "great" night for you? Apnea index around 1? Needing a nap after sleeping for 8 hours means that either your therapy is not optimized or you have something else going on in addition to sleep apnea. Given the very sharp increases, having a higher minimum would likely reduce t...

I just read the regs last week. It says sleep study must be in lab. Will post link to reg.
I concur with the others. Home sleep study is allowed if you qualify for it. I don't (heart problem).

Re: Necessary to have a backup machine?

I support having a backup machine. That said, if your DME provides rentals, find out about availability and price. The other option is to simply have a copy of your prescription on hand and ready to fax or email to cpap.com or secondwind.com. They can overnight a machine. Once you get your second ma...

Re: Medicare DME self pay

I just found a post written a while ago that said that the DME can't let a Medicare patient self pay a new machine. I was counting on being able to buy it myself if need be in the future because I am not going to go without my machine. Many DMEs have contracts that limit them to dealing only with p...

Re: How did you acquire your backup machine?

I acquired my first one from Craigslist. It was shipped to me from Wis. (had 300 hours). I paid via Paypal for security. The second was an Airsense for Her (never used) that included 2 masks (still sealed) via OfferUp, again, in another state (select Nationwide in your search). It costs $20-25 to sh...

Re: Any chance of appealing Medicare denial of CPAP?

If your study has been submitted to Medicare, it could be an uphill battle and you may have to pay for another study out-of-pocket to be reconsidered. Just want you to know that it is a possibility.

Re: Cleaning Heated Hose

You dry the hose completely before hooking it up again. That's why it's generally better to wash it in the a.m. and then let it dry until you go to bed. The hose is designed to be submerged. I am in the group that washes my hose every other week. The doc says AT LEAST monthly. For those who choose n...

Re: Medicare Machine Upgrade

As already mentioned, you need to get the doc to do the paperwork that indicates you have improved sleep with the more expensive item. You are still under rental, so should be able to switch, but the 13 months will start again.

Re: Medicare DME self pay

You are not required to fail any other machine since you had a diagnosis and machine before you started with Medicare, but you do need the copies of your original study - the report and the raw data. You need a copy of the doctor's notes at the time you need a new machine. As mentioned, your SD card...

Re: CDC:80,000 people died of flu last winter in US

If flu season here is too long, our doctor may have us stuck again. That's interesting (See my post above about Gramps doing it twice.). Has your doc done it twice in a previous year? i'll get my advice from my doctor that told me to get it last week. I have a dental hygienist appointment next week...

Re: CDC:80,000 people died of flu last winter in US

Is there such a ting as too early? That is so early that it will stop being effective before the end of the flu season. If you are over 60 or have immune suppressed system, CDC recommends waiting until late October. This is because their system may not continue to react come March, when the flu is ...

Re: Supplemental oxygen with CPAP?

Just as an FYI - at 92% chances are that your doc will not give you supplemental oxygen at all because insurance won't pay for it unless you are below 89%. Sometimes they won't issue the script because they already know you won't be approved by insurance/Medicare. In that case, consider having a dis...

Re: Cheap sleep study using cpap?

For my neighbor, we ran the APAP at 5-20. His pressure went as high as 17. Printed out the report using Sleepyhead and he went to his primary at the VA. They called and scheduled him for a sleep study (which he had 3 weeks later). You don't have to deny the person the ability to breathe. If s/he has...

Re: What machines are remotely controllable? That seems like not necessarily a good thing (?)

Don't know what happened with your friend. He should contact DME because the DME MUST have an order to change pressure. If he has a new machine, it's possible that there is an error in the board. The option to change pressure remotely is actually a good one for home bound folks or folks who live rur...
