Newbie and have some questions :)

Post by Sleepytime_1950 » Wed Jul 26, 2017 5:37 pm

Fifteen days ago I started with my CPAP machine. It's a ResMed AirSense 10. This is a loaner until all my paperwork goes thru with the supplier. When that happens, the supplier will contact me and bring their idea of a CPAP machine over to me. Currently I am comfortable with what I have and how it is working.

First day results:
Usage hours: 10.37
Events per hour: 0.3
Leak 2/min
AHI 0.5
Total AI 0.4
Central Al 0.1

Fifteen days later results:
Usage hours: 9:04
Events per hour: 0
Leak: 19L/Mn
AHI: 0.3
Total AI: 0.2
Central Al: 0.1

I asked my HMO what the acronyms mean and I got a cryptic response "Don't worry, you are doing great". So, I have no idea what an AHI, etc., means.

I started with a sleep specialist but my HMO got in the middle of things............. long story .... and they mucked everything up for me. So, now I am stuck back with my hmo dealing with cryptic responses and well, dealing with an hmo is frustrating. Soon I will be turned over to the supplier, but will keep reporting monthly to my HMO for readings for one year.

I am using a nasal pillow which is quite comfortable. Thought initially it was making my dry eyes worse, only to find out the cream I just started using had lanolin alcohol in the ingredients and once I stopped that, the symptoms went away. I did buy eye googles to protect my eyes away from any overflow of air blowing onto them anyway and that's working out nicely. One thing about the nasal pillow, the two straps keep falling back down my neck and sometimes it wakes me up when the nasal pillow falls off my face, have any ideas?

I do have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, however, since I started with this CPAP machine I am sleeping thru the night, all the way thru the night, except when the pillows fall off, having deep restorative sleep and no snoring that used to keep waking me up.

Basically I want to know about the acronyms and what they mean too.

I clean everything in vinegar and distilled water once a day and let everything air dry.

So, glad I was approved to be here and getting to know all of you

Debbie

Here's a glossary that has the acronyms and what they mean.
http://sleepyhead.sourceforge.net/wiki/ ... p/Glossary

Also if you will get the provider/clinical manual many are explained in more detail there.

https://sleep.tnet.com/home/files/resme ... -guide.pdf

If after reading all that you still need something cleared up come back and ask.

One quick note about the leak number you are seeing that people sometimes don't fully understand.
The leak number on the LCD screen is what we call a 95 % number and all that means is you were are OR BELOW that number for 95% of the night.
It is NOT where you were at all night and it is NOT an average.
24 L/min is where ResMed says the machine can start to have problems compensating for leaks. Brief spikes above 24 isn't the end of the world if they aren't waking you up.

There is software available so you can see more details than you are seeing on the LCD screen.

Welcome to the forum.

See here - wiki/index.php/Category:CPAP_Definitions Ask about any that are missing or unclear.

Please fill our your equipment profile - https://www.cpaptalk.com/ucp.php?i=prof ... pment_info

There are fixes for that. After you have your pillows type in your equipment profile, ask about this again.

I filled in as many questions as your drop down menu allows. You do not have my machine in the CPAP drop down menu. I don't know what humidifier I have, nor the software program.

Thank you for the acronym definitions

Thank you for all your help *smiles*

On the front of your machine, does it say AUTOSET, or anything else?

The menu option for software really only pertains to software choices back when we bought the software...we no longer buy it and the options available are no longer used...so ignore that part.

The ResMed AirSense 10 machines are indeed listed in the menu but it's in alphabetical order in the "A" section because of "AirSense or AirCurve".

Your model name will be clearly shown on the front of your machine....
AirSense 10 CPAP
AirSense 10 Elite
AirSense 10 AutoSet
AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her...

which one is it?

You might get some tips on keeping the pillows in place all night by watching two or three of these videos - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... 10+for+her+

There are also some videos at the bottom of this page - http://www.resmed.com/us/en/consumer/pr ... t-p10.html

Cardsfan and Pugsy ~ The front of my machine says "Air Sense 10 auto Set for Her".

I don't know the type of humidifier, any hints where to look for the name?

Thank you ChicagoGranny for the two links, will check them out

Debbie

No need to look. With the AirSense 10 the humidifiers are all the same and built in to the machines.
The equipment menu choices are for the people who have humidifiers that can be removed because they are separate equipment.
No need to make a choice for humidifier...it's included in your machine model choice. I already can see it now that you have made the correct choice.

It's a nice machine.
It's like 3 machines in one. 3 different modes.
Full data and all that. You can use Sleepyhead software or ResScan or both if you wish (but ResScan is Windows only).

I see you are using the P10 nasal pillow and having trouble keeping the pillows from falling out of your nostrils.
What color headgear are you using...blue/gray or pink/gray?
Are you aware that variable tension can be achieved by how far the 2 straps are placed on the head?
If you simply can't get it snug enough...if you are using the blue/gray headgear there is a smaller headgear (the pink/gray)...or if you are already using the pink/gray you can try washing the headgear in really hot water and try to get the elastic to shrink a bit.
You may be like me...female with a small head and sometimes these headgears that are more universal in fit is just a bit too large for my small head.
If you can't get it snug enough...they shouldn't just fall out...you might look at the Swift FX nasal pillow mask. The pillows are a lot like the P10 pillows but the headgear is much more adjustable in terms of tension...only drawback is that the FX pillows don't have the silent vent diffusing that the P10 has...so it's a bit louder in terms of vent noise. Not horribly louder but you will likely notice the venting more.

Also...what size nasal pillow are you using...might try the next size up and see if it stays in the nostrils better.

Hi Pugsy ~ I went searching in my bag that was given to me and found a new sample yesterday, opened it up and discovered an extra small nasal pillow (it's blue and pink). Tried it on last night and it's soo much tighter and the nasal pillow fit much snugger. The small was chaffing the inside of my nasal passageways, this morning, no chaffing. However the leak rate was 19 and has remained at 19 since I started using it. I had 0 events last night which is the second time in 22 days since starting this CPAP. I did wake up this morning and found the nasal pillow on the floor, lol, don't have any recollection of taking it off, so it only recorded 6 hours instead of the usual 10. I think the blue/pink with the extra small nasal pillow is going to work for me.

I did see the YouTube video of the Swift FX nasal pillow with all the adjustments. I learned alot just watching these YouTube videos. This machine I am using now is a loaner, so when the supplier finally kicks in, it's anyone's guess what they will bring me.

I am getting very deep restorative sleep now, big difference. I don't even get up 10 times to use the restroom anymore. Interesting?

Thanks for your feedback

Debbie

The leak rate of 19...that number is off the machine...is that correct?
If so that's what we call a 95% number and all it means is that for 95 % of the night you were at OR BELOW that number.
People often don't know about or understand the OR BELOW part of the definition.
I wouldn't worry about it as long as you are sleeping good and feeling good. It's still below the 24 L/min line in the sand that ResMed gives us and actually that's a real conservative line in the sand anyway.

Actually no more gazillion pee breaks in the middle of the night was one of the very first symptoms that went away with cpap therapy for me.
Not unusual. Nocturia is a common symptom of sleep apnea because of a stress hormone that the heart dumps into the blood and when the kidney's get it they go into overdrive and produce a lot of urine.
Stop the apnea events and you stop the heart from dumping that stress hormone and that means the kidneys don't go into overdrive and we get to sleep all night without having to get up to pee.
I have always said that if that was the only thing I saw improvement on with cpap therapy that it would still be worth doing.

So...at least you know that cpap is working and working well.

Hi Bugsy ~ Yes, the number 19 for leakage is off the machine. I am writing down all the numbers daily, just for my own interests to see how I am doing. Thank you for explaining that the line is at 24 for the leak rate, so it sounds I am good for now .

Yes !!! It's soo swell not to get up every hour on the hour to rush to the bathroom. I began to think, is this really all there is to my age group, will I ever get a good nights sleep again? And now, this magical box called a CPAP has taken it all away and I can rest peacefully. Thank you for explaining the mechanics of how the organs all work together to rush me into the bathroom all night long, before CPAP. So, the heart stresses from the Apnea and it dumps the stress hormone into the blood which in turn gets the kidneys pumping, very interesting !! When I have a panic attack or experience high anxiety, same thing happens to me during the daytime hours. The body is a complicated little machine.

This is weird.... last night slept 5 hours, got up and then went back to bed and took a nap for 3 hours. When I went to write down my data, it only showed my usage hours 0.14. Should I notify the hmo that rented me the device that there may be something wrong with the device?

Bet you slept past noon on that nap.

Resmed machines reset the "daily data" on the LCD at noon every day. So if you slept until about 12:08 or 12:09, the machine's LCD would say you had 0.14 hours of usage.
