they normally don't do invasive procedures like that if there is no surgeon immediately available to open you up and repair damage. so even if it is in the hospital, no surgeon on call in the building, no procedure. they may not talk about them and you may not see them but they are there someplace.

Where did you get this information? My last two colonoscopies were at a clinic. Both times, I asked the doc what happens if he punctures my colon. Both times, he said, "We call an ambulance to take you to a hospital."

I've had a dozen or more c-scopes in clinics when I was covered by private insurance. In 2008 during one the Dr said "damn I may have perforated your bowel" while trying to take a polyp biopsy during the procedure. They told me to get dressed and go to their affiliated hospital ER. I drove myself tho they did offer an ambulance. There I underwent another c-scope so the specialist could take a look. He said it was a deep biopsy but no discernible perforation but kept me overnight, triple antibiotics at-the-ready and hooked me up to a ringers lactate or D5W drip in case I developed a fever. Twas right after that I forfeited my private HI and went back to the VA. Other than sometimes 3-4 week waits they've NEVER come close to such an error with me personally before or after the above private insurance scare.

i remember what it was. my wife had a colonoscopy and had a polyp that they wouldn't clip out due to the shape and risk in the polyp and no surgeon available. she had to have a second colonoscopy to have it removed with a surgeon on call. so they can do them without surgeons but can't always complete the work without one.

Called to schedule routine Colonoscopy after receiving letter in mail that I was due

Was told that since I am now on BiPap (switched 9-17-17), they would have to do the Colonoscopy in the Hospital - instead of in the "Clinic" where it has always been done.
Shoulda told 'em you're not on a bipap, you're on a vpap, and waited for the confused looks.

what happens if he punctures my colon.
My understanding is that although, of course, anything is possible, that scenario is becoming quite rare for simple, routine, diagnostic/screening colonoscopies.
"Globally, the incidence [of iatrogenic colonic perforations (ICPs)] is estimated to be 0.016–0.8% for diagnostic colonoscopies. . . . In a recent study of 56,882 colonoscopies [in 14 Lithuanian hospitals], full-thickness large bowel perforation occurred in forty patients, corresponding to an incidence rate of 0.07% (0.05% in diagnostic/screening procedures and 0.17% in therapeutic colonoscopies)." -- "2017 WSES guidelines for the management of iatrogenic colonoscopy perforation"; World J Emerg Surg. 2018; 13: 5. Published online 2018 Jan 24. -- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5784542/
Naturally, a diagnostic colonoscopy always has the potential to turn into a therapeutic one, but I believe that even then there are high-risk and low-risk patients/circumstances/methods that relate to perforation possibilities.

Well i'm not a fan of scopes but it did prove beneficial this past year. In the hospital waiting for the doc to share the results on my cscope. His statement kinda surprised me, he said we found something. Imagine the look on his face when I told him not so as I haven't lost anything in there. Anyway they had to remove 8 inches of my colon due to what he "found".
Moral of this story, have your colon checked regularly cause things may get lost in there.
It was non malignant whatever the size of a silver dollar. Hell of a way to lose 25 lbs...

I recently had a colonoscopy at a clinic and notified them that I use an ASV device. The anesthesiologist did quickly examine me, but didn't seem concerned and they went ahead and did the procedure.

I had one today, as it goes.

They charged me extra and insisted on having an anaesthetist present

I was knocked spark out and had no option to bring or use my machine.

This is in Bangkok, though.

I received a letter from my local clinic with an appointment for a 5 year follow up colonoscopy. I was surprised to see they had a list of medical conditions that if I had one I was to notify them . On the list was I using a CPAP or BIPAP or been diagnosed with sleep apnea. When I called they said that it didn't matter when it was done there. By there I think they meant in a hospital setting. I think its because they put you out for the procedure. One minute you're talking to a nurse and the next thing you know they telling you to get dressed.

On the plus side because they put you under for the procedure even with the required prep the day before it is not near as miserable procedure as the 2 sleep tests I've gone through.

As we age, our tissues (like skin, etc) tend to get thinner and easier to tear.
It can be hereditary, or related to a disorder, like psoriasis.
Some patients simply have a higher risk.

I just had one done and it was mandatory that I bring my bipap to use during the procedure. He did what he needed to do while I snoozed away on good drugs. Popped the card into sleephead afterward and was SHOCKED to see AHI of 27 - ALL CLEAR AIRWAY. Why you ask? Because I was on supplemental oxygen and my CO2 was too low so my body didn't need to breathe as much, since CO2 is the body's drive to breathe. It was no big deal as all apnea patients bring their own in. The worst part was using it without the humidifier. Take the "I don't care" drugs and use your xpap.

I've had three colonoscopies by the same doctor. He said, "No need to bring your CPAP. The anesthesiologist and I will make sure you keep breathing. If we see you stop breathing, it's usually just a matter of tipping your chin up a bit and breathing restarts."

I felt fine after each procedure.

YMMV.

I just had my Colonoscopy last week....My experience was similar to CG. My doctor has gotten away from Golitely. He now recommends Gator Aid. 2 qts mixed with a container of Miralax. You can't taste the Miralax so you just drink 1/2 gal of Gator Aid.
No problems.

My Sleep Dr appointment, where I was officially diagnosed, was the morning before my last Colonoscopy so I was sort of twp hours into my prep.

During my pre procedure check list I told of my diagnosis and not sure if it changed how it was done but I had an anesthesiologist that knocked me totally out and was given oxygen. Five years before pretty sure didn't have an anesthesiologist, no oxygen and was not totally out. I recall looking at the monitor.
