Power strip on or off during day?

Post by Susie Kay » Mon Mar 09, 2020 1:45 pm

I've been turning the strip the machine is plugged into off everyday when I get up. When summer comes, we have a lot of lightning storms.

Power strips help with little surges, but my understanding is that you would literally have to unplug the machine completely to offer any real protection from lightning.

My machine, a ResMed, continues to blow some air very softly for a while after a night's session of PAP. It helps a bit with drying. I like that it does that, so I don't unplug it or turn off the strip.

You will save some electric power if you turn it off, even turned off you may get benefit from surge protection. Jim

Many things we use suck power even while turned off, microwaves, t.v.'s, wall warts.

Lightning can bridge gaps you will not believe.
Power strips are little to no protection against high voltage power surges.
(Homeowner's insurance is a better investment against damage.)
Your best bet is backup equipment--(even gently used), safely stored and not plugged in.
Daily use of any plug or switch leads to wear>>failure>>profanity.

"chunkyfrog" is correct. Power strips with surge protectors are of little use and when I used to design multi-million dollar communications systems, they were forbidden. Power protection for whole communication sites costs several thousand dollars and are not available for public use (the technology used that is). If you want MOV protection (common technology for public use), then you may want to consider a "whole house" surge protector that is installed by an electrician at your main AC panel. Again, I do not think that the MOVs that are used in whole house protectors are of much value, I have one anyway. Maybe it will catch one surge.....

I do not unplug my APAP machine. It is one of the least expensive items that are connected to my AC power. Besides, I have three machines, of which only one is ever powered.
