Things non-apnea people say.

Post by Noctuary » Mon Oct 27, 2014 11:33 am

1) "Why don't you try valerian?"

2) "You drink four cups of coffee?? No wonder you don't sleep at night!"

"Why do you say you have sleep apnea?? Strange, you are thin and relatively young..."
"Bruxism? It must be because of stress.."
"You have to exercise more..."

These are not just things "non-apnea" people say (unless the definition of "apnea people" is those in therapy who are informed about it).

These are also the things that those either yet to be diagnosed or those diagnosed (or suspected) but are in denial say. Things the UNINFORMED and stubborn resisters say. I was one of those for a couple decades longer than I should have been.

In the USA,12 million folks are in therapy. 90% of sufferers go undiagnosed or untreated. If you do the math that comes to 120 million who have it which is ~half the adults in the country, and 108 million of them, assuming they never start treatment, will probably pay a heavy price for that. That is tragic on an epic scale. Sleep Apnea is 100% treatable, according to my sleep tech, but knowledge is the only way to fix this epic problem. If a concerted effort would have been made at any point since CPAP was invented ~1981, maybe I would have had a fighting chance to become informed, and get the therapy then.

"He died peacefully in his sleep" is supposed to give survivors comfort. If they only knew the unknown but simple answer to why, and what could have easily prevented it, they would not need comfort, because "he" would probably have lived much longer had "he" been under therapy.

Am I right; am I wrong?

Does this mean that I can no longer die peacefully in my sleep?

No!
Now you can die in a flaming car crash on a Monday morning on your way to the DME to replace your Broken XPAP machine, after it broke Friday night and you didn't get any therapy for 3 nights and fell asleep at the wheel.

Well then you would have died in your sleep now wouldn't you? If unaware, maybe someone could argue peacefully.

While that may just be a flip question, it has a serious answer.

Of course you can. The idea is that you don't want to do that 20 years too early.

There was a famous person, can't remember exactly who, that recently reached 80 and started smoking. He missed it, and he loves it. But he decided that at 80 something else would probably get him before the smoking does, so he made a conscious decision. My first reaction was that it was a looney conscious decision, but maybe he has a point.

I have no plans whatsoever to go anywhere, ever. But at the risk of going too dark here, if I discovered that some fate worse than dying in my sleep might be imminent, I would just stop the therapy.
