I think the doctor's recommendations are sound. Get up if you can't sleep, increase the settings, etc. I would add that stretching before bed or doing some yoga can help you be more comfortable in bed - one less distraction.

Then your age is probably above 65 and you're retired. I am retired. I watch Charlie Rose TV program from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. and then I put the mask on.
