My husband left on three day trip and forgot his cpap. What should he do?

Learn never to forget it again, he'll make sure it's the first thing he packs!

He probably survived for a long time before a diagnosis so apart from not getting good quality sleep and it spoiling his weekend a little, he'll be fine.

Where is he? Near a DME provider, can he get a loaner? Look on Craigslist and get a cheap one. You can ship his to him Overnight delivery. What city is he in?

I am with Hannibal in this one. Most of us have survived, but not thrived w/o a xPAP. I hope you hubby's discomfort will help him remember to not forget. Then again, if you are flush w/cash, the new ResMEd mini looks very tempting, if I were still traveling a lot I would buy one out of pocket and keep it with my travel toiletries. If I were your Hubby I would probably make the case how awful it was and the money would be well spent.

1. Come home immediately.

- or -

2. Try to get a loaner from a local DME. If he is not able to, make sure not to sleep on the back. Apnea is much worse for many people while sleeping on the back.

I personally knew two people who died during the night the first time they skipped a night.

This is just bad information.

Before diagnosis and CPAP treatment, the body had developed several defenses to help protect from sleep apnea. Even hematocrit levels are higher before treatment. After a period of good CPAP treatment, these defenses go away. The patient is in more danger than before treatment.

Don't let these messages panic you...Tell your husband to sleep elevated...in a recliner or propped up with pillows. If possible, have him try to get a loaner or overnight his machine ...and mask... to him.

I agree with Granny. I also know a man who went on vacation and decided to leave his cpap at home on purpose. He didn't want to take it on his cruise. He had a stroke the first night of his vacation he did not use his cpap. At least he was still on land, and able to get to a hospital. The good news is he survived.

If this is true then I apologize and thank you for correcting me.

Anybody know anyone who died while wearing a xPAP? I am sure it's happened.

I'm sure people have died while wearing a CPAP, but it could be from many other reasons that have no relationship to OSA.

Thousands die every year while using noninvasive ventilators.

The point being that because someone died while not using their CPAP does not mean that they died from not using their CPAP any more than dying while wearing one mean that wearing a CPAP causes death.
