Riding in a car and using my CPAP

Post by Algordon » Fri Apr 06, 2018 2:18 pm

I need to power my ResMed S9 in the car while I ride on a long trip for a few hours. Any suggestions on what I need to purchase in order for it to work?

Yes, there is a ResMed 12VDC to 24VDC converter for your cpap. You would plug that into a car 12V receptacle and then plug the output of the converter into the ResMed cpap power connector. Be sure to get the right converter for your model of cpap (S9 or 10) and you'll be fine.

If you really want to go on the cheap, you could always use an inverter. The ps only takes 90 w like a laptop. These cost about 25 bucks from harbor freight....use a coupon if you go there they are everywhere. https://www.harborfreight.com/400-watt- ... 66814.html you would just need to cut off the end for a cig lighter or you can buy a small wheel chair battery and it will last the entire night if your power ever goes out. its a win win!

I think this is the one... https://www.cpapsupplyusa.com/36970-res ... erter.aspx
That does not look like the Resmed brand one.

The one shown at cpapsupply is indeed a ResMed brand or at least that is what it says on the product description.
It is a bit cheaper than cpap.com but it doesn't come with alligator clip thingies.

The Goodman's don't get horribly bent out of shape when we link to other websites offering the same products.
We have never really discussed that aspect of our linking to other websites but I have seen them let other such links slide by.
Yes, it is nice if we can use links to their products whenever possible but I think that the Goodman's are secure in their company that it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

Now if someone from cpapsupply had come here and that's all they were doing....totally different story there.
And it has happened on occasion...not necessarily from cpapsupply but from some of the other online suppliers. They get the axe swiftly.

I stand corrected in both cases.

Sorry. I thought if cpap.com had it we needed to link to them.

You can live without CPAP for a few hours. Look out the window.

So I have to add my standard warnings about using a car battery to power a cpap. If you're using this to catch a few ZZZ's while someone else is driving, then there should be no problem - almost any car alternator can provide the 1 or 2 amps needed to power a cpap, even if using an inverter. If you're using humidity, it is possible you could pop the fuse to the socket since many cars are limited to 10 amps on the cigarette lighter socket. (It shouldn't go quite that high, but I've often seen 10amp fuses pop at prolonged 8 amp loads - make sure you have a spare.)

If, on the other hand, you're talking about pulling over and sleeping for 6 -8 hours, you run a significant risk of damaging the battery or not being able to start in the morning. Its about the same a leaving a light on in the car overnight. Starting batteries are designed for a few seconds of high discharge and an immediate recharge - they do no take kindly to deep discharge, and can't put out full power even if partially discharged. A new, larger battery may survive with minimal issues, an older, small battery is a bigger risk. Adding a humidifier and/or inverter makes the problem much worse - its easily possible to kill a battery using both because the load could go over 50 amp-hours. A better solution is to carry a small AGM battery. Since these are deep cycle, they are happy to deeply discharge. A $65 U1 AGM should run for several nights without damage, so you don't have to worry about recharging during the day. It also serves as a home backup and can even start a car if needed.

Cpap.com might match prices--never hurts to ask.
