More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
One thing that medical professionals can do it to walk the floors of hospitals and look for patients displaying the obvious signs of Sleep Apnea (loud or irregular snoring and gasping). I don't believe that this is being done. However, since medical providers are already in hospitals, it's a good place to start.
Re: More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
ANd maybe we could have kids report snoring to school teachers with a subsequent referral to the health police?

Re: More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
My initial diagnosis was made by the doctor that did morning rounds when I had my knee replaced. The nurses noticed the blood oxygen monitor was going off every time I fell asleep. They noted it in my records, and the doctor scheduled me for a sleep study.

Yes, Like Lawyers, Trolling for victims, HEPA be Damned. Another great idea from D.H., way to go. Maybe Heart doctors could go with them with a X-Ray machine, and troll for Broken Hearts. You can hardly get Doctors to see you in your room before they operate on you.... Surely you live in a different World..

The point here is that the hospital is responsible for your care and there are "opportunities" here that might be problematic elsewhere.
Re: More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
I think it would be a good idea if nurses/techs, etc., were trained to look for patients displaying loud or irregular snoring and gasping. In most situations in hospitals, they are around more than the doctors.D.H. wrote: ↑Sat Jul 07, 2018 10:07 amOne thing that medical professionals can do it to walk the floors of hospitals and look for patients displaying the obvious signs of Sleep Apnea (loud or irregular snoring and gasping). We need a Sleep Apnea Awareness Month. And a national campaign to help facilitate that awareness.

Re: More aggressive pursuit of the undiagnosed
Several year back, I was visiting a friend in the hospital. He was asleep when I arrived, and he was snoring, stopping breathing and breaking each apnea with a snort and a deep breath. I sat talking to his daughter.
When the nurse came in, I asked her if he had been sleeping a lot. She said he had. I told the nurse he has a bad case of sleep apnea. She said the nurses had been trained to recognize the symptoms of sleep apnea and put it on the patients' records. I asked her how many days she had been attending to my friend. She said three days. I asked her if she had put on his record that he has sleep apnea. She said no. All the while, the friend was snoring to rattle the ceiling panels.
You can train people, but the culture also has to be changed.
