I've had my share of the creeping crap that winds up in my chest and sinuses, making breathing improbable. At these times, I have turned up the humidity, upped the heated hose temp, sometimes bumped up the pressure, and occasionally put some essential oil or Vicks VapoRub behind the air intake to help clear things while I sleep. It helps a bunch, in my case. AND I found out recently that I've got allergies, which explains why I always feel slightly congested. So I've added Flonase, generic Claritin (not D) and the saline sinus rinse to my arsenal.
Wouldn't you know it...I have NEVER had to switch to a FFM, and have always been able to work through using my Swift FX pillows. Getting gooey is a PITA, but a bit of thinking ahead can make all the difference.

I take generic mucinex for the sloppy, soupy snot, and alprazolam for the
rare intense anxiety that can prevent sleep. (A 10 tablet rx lasts a year)
