Distilled Water?

Post by abu117 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 10:12 am

Hello everyone. I've been religiously using distilled water for my CPAP as per the CPAP's instructions. lately, I've had a couple of people tell me that since our local water is so clean (Western Canada), there really is no need to use distilled water.

Any thoughts on this?

Abe

Why in the Devil would you chose to do things correctly instead of questioning the written word? Shame on you! NOT! Jim

The use of distilled water is more an attempt to prevent scale buildup than to prevent bacteria. Nothing wrong with drinkable tap water, but you will want to clean the humidifier periodically with a vinegar solution to help keep scale and bacteria under control.

Lots of minerals in your clean Canadian water...minerals cause scale buildup in your humidifier.

Religiously?
Why not holy water?
Any water will work--as long as it is odorless.
Even mineral water--if you don't mind cleaning the lime out.
I use distilled because I am laaaaazy.

I used to use distilled water religiously, then learned here that distilled water was really more of a cleaning convenance than medically necessary.

My solution, try tap water myself.

I haven't bought distilled water since late 2018. Every night, I empty the previous evenings tap water, rinse it out a few times, refill it and use. I have absolutely no mineral build up and I have never used vinegar, lemon juice or other. I wash my tank maybe once a month with hot water and dawn. The tank is almost a year and a half old.

Nobody here can tell you what your mineral buildup will be like, unless they share the same water system.

Try it, then determine if there is an increased cleaning regiment and if its more convenient of lugging around distilled water.

Distilled water is recommended to prevent lime and mineral buildup. Just like a kettle, the deposits will build up. As others have said, it's a trade off.

I am in Toronto. The water here has chlorine and ammonia (among other things) in the water. I live less than a km from the water reservoir so the chemicals are very fresh when they reach my tap.. When I first tried tap water in my XPAP, the ammonia smell was annoyingly strong. I purchased a Zero Water filter and it has eliminated the ammonia smell.

The Zero Water filter works out to be about the same price as distilled water but my husband doesn't have to lug all those bottles home.

as you can see, it's more for convenience (less cleaning of tank) than for health reasons.

as i can easily afford a gallon of distilled water and i HATE cleaning stuff on any sort of schedule, i stick with distilled. i give the tank the hairy eyeball when i fill it up. if it gets "scummy", i clean it.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

'clean' is a relative term regarding water.

Here in SoCal, we have 'hard' water, with calcium and lime that causes bad scaling, so distilled water is really the best option,
but if you have 'soft' water, it's probably totally OK to use it.

Just like a kettle, the deposits will build up.
If the remaining water in a humidifier is emptied out every day, deposits will not build up.

The comparisions to a kettle or steam iron etc are quite erroneous.

and if the remaining water in the humidifier isn't emptied out, it will.

which makes cpapian's comparison valid.
