(Attn Pugsy) Forum attachment quota problems

Post by Dog Slobber » Mon Aug 10, 2020 7:07 pm

Hi Pugsy,
I, Zonker, Likely Granny and likely a few others have been encountering errors when trying to submit posts with attachments.

Basically, there is no more space to upload pictures to the forum.

The error message is: "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached"

The solution is:
From the AdminCP panel in Attachment Settings increase the Total attachment quota

Image

I understand that you have Moderation privileges, but not necessarily Administration privileges, so may have to refer this to one of the board Administrators.

Other things that can help:
  • older posts with attachments can be deleted
  • member can go through their own older posts and delete any attachments
  • stop posting attachments with zonker's head :)
Until attachment space is increased, and/or a lot of attachments removed members will not be able to submit content that contain attachments.

thanks for bringing this up. i'm not getting that error message. i'll try an attachment now and see what it says. no, what i get is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. the only option is to delete the file. maybe this is the same as what you say?

Yes, that's the problem.
If you click the Yellow Warning Triangle you see the error message.

Sorry folks.
That is beyond my scope of powers.
I think that maybe we probably need to maybe go into our own scope of attachments and do some house cleaning.
I believe that is probably something in the IT powers that be section....

Originally the size of the attachment allowed was increased but I do believe that it was mentioned at that time that the allowable space for storage would likely be used up more quickly. This was all done with the big forum software change done some 2 years ago ...maybe longer.... I forget exactly when it was changed and it was at that time that we were allowed to do attachments. Prior to that our only choice was to host images and such on photo hosting websites.

I will point Carolyn to this thread...and she in turn will likely have to decide if they want to increase the attachment storage thing and get in touch with the IT people.

BUT.....I do think that we should help out by doing a bit of house cleaning ourselves. Big images, gifs, and all that stuff...while fun...it does take up a lot of storage. Let's face it....we haven't been exactly frugal at times.

Hey everyone....go into your user account control panel where it says manage attachments and go in and look for duplicates.
I just cleaned up mine and I had several where I had uploaded the same attachment several times so I had a lot of duplicates.

Looks like it was 2018 when we started doing attachments....I cleaned out all of mine from 2018 and most of 2019.

Now mine weren't very large so I probably didn't make much of a dent in things but if you all have uploaded the same gif of zonkers head every time....you don't need but one in there.

You know when we want to post the same attachment we don't have to upload it again each time. We can point to it in the manage attachments section and save storage space.

if you or dog slobber can give simple and concise instructions as to how to do what you suggest, please let us know.

i want to do what i can do conserve space. i LOVE this forum and want to do what i can to preserve it's valuable space.

All I know is this

Go to manage attachments...find the attachment you want to use and right click on the name of it and then choose "copy link location"

and paste it here inside the image brackets

https://www.cpaptalk.com/download/file.php?id=9830 you get this link if you don't use the image brackets

and you get a report of mine that is old but with a to die for 0.0 leak line

I just deleted a bunch of old data images from my therapy thread. Do you want me to delete my virus meme thread. I think that would get rid of a ton of images.

I don't know if it's going to help to clean up the old threads. I think what has happened is the forum software storage itself is at capacity and it's the attachments themselves upload so we can use them that probably needs to be cleaned up.
So even if we delete a thread with a lot of images in it the files themselves are still stored within the software the forum uses and that's why I suggested that we go to our own profiles and the manage attachment section and do some cleaning in there because that is where the files are actually stored that we draw from when we post an image.

I just cleaned a ton of old attachments.
  1. Method I found to clean up a lot fairly quickly:
  2. User Control Panel (click on username - upper right)
  3. Manage attachments
  4. Post Time (This will sort by posting time)
  5. Click in the Mark check box for all post you want to delete
  6. Delete marked

What DS did is what I did but I sorted by Filename instead of posting date and this enabled me to easily see the duplicates and triplicates of the same file being uploaded over and over again and thus taking up space.

The Sort thing is down at the bottom lower left corner below the page of attachments listed. You click on the little arrow to expand the menu and make your sorting choices.

would you be so kind as to give a step by step on how one does this?

i particularly want to do this for my hat-tip gif and a few others that i use regularly.

thanks!

Let me try to think of something simple and easy...

Can you save a text file or url address to a notepad document and have it handy on your desktop? Do you know how to do that?
and do you know which little image button on the forum editor thing is for inserting image files? It's the little picture just to the right of the asterick button.....or to the left of the little chain looking thing.
When you click on the image button you get the 2 image brackets. I purposely put a space between them so you could see them.
Be sure each has both brackets....I had to remove the first right side bracket to get this to show up.

When you put the url address of your gif in between the 2 img brackets you image file will show up. If you don't use the image bracket thing you get a link.

For the gifs or images you use often I suggest that you just save them to a notepad document and then copy/paste the address in between the 2 image brackets.

You can find the url address where the gif is stored within the forum software by going to the manage attachments section and right clicking on the file name....then choose "copy link location" and that is what you would paste on the notepad for quick access.
Otherwise you would have to go to the manage attachment section and having your usual saved to a notepad document would likely be quicker.
