BiPAP IS technically correct, whether it has been TMed or not. Just as APAP IS technically correct, whether it has been TMed or not. Which brand TMed which in a market move to prevent its use in advertisement literature of other brands is, I maintain, an irrelevant discussion that derails threads about other, serious, matters.

But, that said, I love everyone in this forum. Even Zonker.

OK, OK, I ADMIT it: My primary goal with this thread was just to see if I could make it onto PR's coveted "Accounts to put on the foe list" list. I seem to have failed, so far.

Oh well. On to my next way to attempt to entertain myself during COVID-19 lockdown . . .

please show me a statement by Respironics in which they state that they consider "BiPAP" to be a brand name, not just a term that they have trademarked.
As far as I know, Philips Respironics does not publish Marketing 101 texts.

I do understand what you are getting at with this thread. But, I don't remember posts where newbies were chastised for saying BiPAP when they were commenting about bilevel. Maybe it happens, and I am inured to it.

So zonker, exactly how much weight did you gain with all that popcorn?

Jnk, fascinating about Resmed holding the TM for apap! No one seems to have a problem with that term. I am guilty of using 'bipap' universally, at least in my mind (not sure I have ever written anything about it ... probably not as i have no experience with it).

It does seem a little odd to be comfortable with one and not the other...

It seems to me that many live here only to argue about moot points claiming to make "Internet corrections". Certainly they have 'job' security.
It is beyond my training but it is IMHO that low self esteem (untreated and out of control) on the internet that causes this type of behavior.

Enter the queen...

OR "Kleenex", who here is old enuff to remember that?
Sorry, but Kleenex is still the legally registered trademark of Kimberly-Clark. And, they still write cease and desist letters to manufacturers violating their trademark. It can be seen in the following case how vigoursly KC defends the trademark in Turkey where they don't even sell Kleenex ---> https://www.mondaq.com/advicecentre/con ... mary--2012
So where did I mention Kleenex was or was not "Trademarked"? Kindly show me.
IMHO it is another commonly used name for a generic paper product. Everyone knows what you are talking about when you use it (correctly or incorrectly).

fwiw - A trademark typically protects brand names and logos used on goods and services.

But no where is it against the law for a layperson to misuse a "Trademarked" product name generically, that I know of and I can't be for sure that anyone of the wurd nurds who live here can show me where it is outlawed.

i'm just here as a UN observer.
So an UN-observer manages to unsee something already seen, as opposed to a NON-observer? Now MY head hurts!

Or did you mean United Nations? If so ya better hurry before you get unfunded like the WHO. I think it was because they wasted all those guitars during their concerts.

I hereby absolve you of all "guilt." (Maybe say three Hail Grannies?) In fact, take pride in never having "corrected" anyone else's usage for no good reason.

I've actually lost a few pounds during lockdown. Everyone around me has gained. So I'm hoping my doc grades on the curve.

Hmm, should I listen to the manufacturers, or you...

such a dilemma .

Sometimes the incorrect and imprecise use of trademarked names is unhelpful and correcting is helpful.
And just as often, if not more so, the incorrect and imprecise "corrections" on accepted use of words that somebody somewhere has TMed is particularly UNhelpful.
In your oh so humble OPINION.

Hopefully, you'll get all this bullshit out of your system in this waste of time thread.

I'd be happy if you just put me on your put-on-the-foe-list list for a while. Just don't ever put me on your actual foe list, please, because that would just crush me. You KNOW how sensitive I can be. 8)

I tend to agree with DS above. PR didn't even allude to anyone being an "idiot" or demeaning a newbie for not knowing the differences between "bipap" or whatever pap. He was concise and to the point with what he said and the questions asked.
Now I know that sometimes he does on occasion use the "idiot" word but it's when he has been challenged and argued with....and when that happens, to be honest, I tend to think to myself "if the shoe fits...wear it" kind of thing.
Starting to think that JNK is desperately wanting me to put him in that category.
