Going to the Potty at Nighttime

Post by gebo » Sat Feb 18, 2023 7:03 pm

For those of you that end up going to the bathroom several times a night, what is your unhooking procedure?

Do you remove your mask from your face/head? Do you just unhook the hose from your mask and darth Vader it to the toilet?

Cpap has reduced my need to go at night.
Most of the time, when I have to go, it's nearly time to get up anyway.
Then I don't have to decide.

I've always detached the short hose that goes with my mask from the long hose. Easier to stay half asleep!

i take off the entire mask. as it's a p10, not much there. and at this point in my journey, it's habitual getting it back on.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

For me, I leave the mask on and unhook the hose.

how many times do you have to get up to go to the bathroom. if you are over 55 and get up more than 3 times. its time to check your PSA. do you have any history of prostate cancer in your family. I'm cured from prostate cancer. I was 65 when I had it. I was getting up 4 times overnight for about a month. I new I had a problem because my father had prostate cancer too. My PSA test saved my ass. if you only get up 2 times you should be ok. any male over 55 today should get a PSA test every year.

Prostate cancer isn't the only potential cause for nocturia.

Over active bladder.
Medication side effects.
A benign enlargement of the prostate can also cause nocturia.

Obviously untreated or under treated OSA is another cause but we assume with a nice now AHI that the OSA is effectively dealt with so in that case we look at other causes.

To fix a problem we first have to identify the problem.

I rarely ever have to get up in the night to go pee so I can't really comment much on the OP's original question here.
Besides...I use the Bleep/Eclipse and with the Eclipse and the magnets I would just separate the magnets and the metal rings if I needed to get out of bed for any reason. Super easy.

Like Pugsy, I now use the Eclipse and just slide the magnets off the metal rings on the rare occasions I need to get up (so different from pre-CPAP days, thank goodness!). When I used the DreamPorts, I disconnected the short hose from the long hose.

PSA is fine. No prostrate cancer in my family. Just got a large prostate and have too many glasses of grape juice at 10 pm.

I just switched to pillows and life is much better. Switched out to Dreamwear Gel pillows last night. No leak at all and only got up once to go to bathroom.

Another very common cause of nocturia is excess fluid retention. Many people get dependent edema as they age fir a variety of reasons having nothing to do with the heart's function. When people lie down in bed, the legs are no longer dependent. The fluid migrates back into the circulatory system, recognized by the kidneys as excess, and excreted as urine. So an individual who can go 8 hours on an airplane during the day without having to urinate may nonetheless have to urinate multiple times during the night.

To answer the poster's question, I use the Resmed n30i and just remove it if it is necessary at night.

My p10 goes on and off in a flash, so no need to fumble with connectors.

If I drink a Diet Coke within four hours or so of going to bed, I'll be up three or four times. Otherwise, usually just once.
