Anyone able to sleep on your back with your machine?

Anyone able to get restful sleep while sleeping on your back and using your PAP machine?

My nose always feels congested when I sleep on my side, and I’m just more comfortable on my back. And I’ve been using a cervical collar, and it’s really uncomfortable side sleeping.

Do you need more pressure when you sleep on your back than on your side?

I sleep on my back about 3 hours during the night. My setting is on variable pressure so the machine decides if I need a pressure increase. I have not noticed anything.

Thank you. I don’t know why, but I’ve been kind of afraid to try sleeping on my back. I’m always worried about my jaw dropping, even with a cervical collar and mouth tape.

I always sleep on my back and use a cervical collar. My AHI consistently stays under 1.

You may find you get quite a few (more) hypopneas than usual as well though your machine may compensate for them of course.

Yes. I never slept on my back pre-CPAP. Now I sleep 3-4 hours on my back. It's great.

No cervical collar, or strap. I mouth tape to address mouth leaks.

I almost always sleep on my back, which definitely helps with nasal congestion. Give it a try!

I'm not clear why the original poster is using a cervical collar. It's possible that the underlying condition is causing a problem.

Anyhow, you generally will need a higher pressure on your back than on your side. I was titrated on my back, so that's how I sleep.

If you apply mouth tape properly, it's impossible for the jaw to drop with or without a cervical collar.

I used to sleep exclusively on my right side and never move, but now I'm having some back pain and some shoulder pain and I turn right side, back, and left side a few times a night. I'm most comfortable on my back these days. My AHI is still great (0.2 - 0.3) with variable pressure. I used to stick a soft C-shaped pillow under my chin to give a little support to my chin, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with the pillow I use now.

If you apply mouth tape properly, it's impossible for the jaw to drop with or without a cervical collar.

How so? Maybe it won’t drop as far with mouth tape, but your teeth don’t stay sealed shut because you have mouth tape on your mouth. If your jaw drops even a little bit, that’s enough for your tongue to relax and slide back into your throat and restrict your airway. Pursing your lips and putting mouth tape on your mouth isn’t going to prevent that from happening.
