Odor / Chemical Smell

Post by Marvin11747 » Mon Nov 13, 2023 4:08 pm

Hello. I am using the ResMed model 11 and 2 nights the CPap machine put out a nasty odor in the nasal pillow I was using. This happened once while I was sleeping but it sure woke me up? Has anyone heard of this happening? What could have caused this bad odor? Thanks. Marvin

it could be that "new car smell". it should go away on it's own. in the meantime, try a cotton ball soaked in some pleasant aroma. place it just outside the airtake vent to mask the smell until it goes away.

good luck!

Hi Zonker. Thanks for your reply. No, this was not a new car smell. It was coming from the airway of the unit. Thanks. Marvinh

Did this odor start out immediately or come on during the night?

Burnt plastic smell or something else? Can you describe it in more detail?

Did you have water in the humidifier water chamber?

Hi Pugsy.
No this odor came on suddenly and woke me up.

Not burnt plastic smell. Its hard to describe. Like a piece of medal that is being ground to a smooth finish. And these are the shavings that are left over.

Yes, I have water in the humidifier chamber.

Thank you. Marvin

The ONLY time I have had any odor with any machine (been on cpap with numerous machines for over 14 years now) has been when I forgot to top off the water and the water chamber ran dry. When that has happened it is a burnt plastic smell.

I don't know what is overheating in your machine but what you are experiencing isn't normal and if it continues you need to be having a chat with whomever you got the machine from. It's not normal and I don't think covering up the odor with sweet smelling stuff is the way to go because that might be masking a more serious electrical/motor issue.

Now there can be some people who are super sensitive to odors (like from the plastic hose or mask) but those odors come on straight away immediately when you put the mask on and turn the machine on.
Something that comes on in the middle of the night...that's not simple off gassing of the equipment.

The one thing that I would suggest is to make sure that the odor is coming from the machine. That is, make sure that this is not an odor that is present in the room!

If you got your machine from a DME with insurance, CALL THEM. Generally they are on the hook for 5 years of maintenance--particularly if you are on Medicare. Ask them for a loaner while they check out your machine.
