How do you protect your machine from electrical spikes?
I've got mine set up on a power strip but it's a pretty cheap one, not sure if it has a built in surge protector. Is there any built in surge protection on the PRS1? Would it be a good idea to buy a better power strip or stack power strips (which is how my computer is setup)?

You might buy a surge protector suitable for an important, expensive computer.

Or you could get surge protectors on your electrical box when you rewire your house. You might buy a surge protector suitable for an important, expensive computer.

I think rewiring the house (which isn't ours to begin with) is probably going slightly overboard.BlackSpinner wrote:Or you could get surge protectors on your electrical box when you rewire your house. You might buy a surge protector suitable for an important, expensive computer.

Wow, It was 5.99 about ten minutes ago!
It's just small portable and can be left connected to the power brick.
Cheers

Re: How do you protect your machine from electrical spikes?
You know, I went back and back tracked through the searches I did and it was always $11.29 (my mistake I must be getting old--turned 50 about 2 weeks ago ) there was a $5.99 one but I got it mixed up with the one that I posted earlier the cheaper one is found at this link.Lizistired wrote:What price did it give you? 5.99 or 11.29?KatyDidAgain wrote:Builta, that's really neat. Re: How do you protect your machine from electrical spikes?
Better check the current needed to operate your equipment. 2.5A max is very likely too low. And I would never trust my xPAP equipment to a cheap "supressor".
A false sense of security is no security.

Re: How do you protect your machine from electrical spikes?
I think that you will find that that is 2.5 Amps AC current. Respironics PRS1 brick has a 2.1 amp (Max) current rating. Most of the newer units (from the various OEMs) typically run at around 0.7 to 1.5 Amps AC (120 volt AC).BernieRay wrote:Better check the current needed to operate your equipment. 2.5A max is very likely too low. Re: How do you protect your machine from electrical spikes?
My whole house has a surge protector provided at no cost by the power company. Check with yours to see if they will do it for free. It connects to the meter and is quite small.KatyDidAgain wrote:I've got mine set up on a power strip but it's a pretty cheap one, not sure if it has a built in surge protector. I will be getting an uninteruptible power supply to sit between my machine and the wall. This device is readily obtainable at office supply or computer stores and provides a separation from the house power in case of surge or power loss.
It will only be good in case of power loss for 10 to 20 minutes or so, depends on the CPAP machine. But it will beep when the power if off so you can wake up and not end up sucking on the hose with no blower.
As others have said, cheap is not the way to go for a surge protector. Cheap ones are not always the most reliable hardware.
That said, because the PR S1 uses a brick transformer to go from 110 AC to 12VDC, it may provide a level of protection for minor surges.
