Calling All ZEO Users, Past and Present

Post by Jay Aitchsee » Sat Jun 18, 2011 4:45 pm

Hi,
I would like to hear about your experiences using ZEO. I am thinking about adding one to assist in overcoming non-respiratory related sleep disturbances, like PLMD. Personally, I think it's important to be able to objectively measure sleep quality. To me, the subjective measure by how one feels in the morning and the following day has too many variables to rely on alone as an indicator of progress being made.

I would like to get a reasonably accurate measure of the number of arousals and the time spent in the various stages during a sleep period. As a user, do you think the ZEO is capable of accurately doing this? Have you been able to substantiate the results provided by ZEO by any other source? If you think it's accurate, why? If not, why not?

I am skeptical but would certainly buy one if there is a consensus that the ZEO is a useful tool.

Thanks in advance for your responses, I look forward to hearing from you.
Jay

I tried one about a year back when I was having difficulties sleep. The Zeo gave me absolutely no insite and was saying all was fine. I wouldn't bother...just my opinion.

Works just fine for me. Reacted to the (expected) change in sleep patterns caused by new drug regimen (Xanax - fewer deep and REM phases), REM phases correlate VERY nicely with Apnea/Hypopnea phases from the CPAP.
Sometimes, it gets confused - like last night, when it thought I was lying awake for about 45 minutes, twice, when I could swear I slept through. But by and large, it works!

My sleep study ECG said I was asleep when I know full well I was awake all that night.

ZEO is a lot less accurate than ECG, but still useful. It's all relative..

My only gripe with them, is they don't sell to Australia yet..

Bad ZEO... Naughty company. That's a ZERO for ZEO's in Australia!

Ps: They are also open-source friendly and provide an API.. so I suppose they get one extra brownie point in my books.

I wonder if alpha intrusions would show up in the data from the Zeo.

I love mine--have been using it for about 4 months or so. The biggest benefit is that it confirmed that I wasn't sleeping very well (little to no deep or REM sleep) and so I've been working on those issues and have had great improvement. However, do NOT get this if you want it to be as detailed as a PSG--it isn't and it isn't supposed to be. Sleep stages are broken into light, deep, REM, and awake. I've found it to be pretty accurate for me--the awake times definitely coincide with when I'm awake and have looked at the clock.

My apnea events coincide to when I'm in REM sleep, and the amount of REM and deep sleep definitely coincide with how I felt that day (I always check my data a day late and try to guess my sleep patterns). It has also helped me see how various things like wine or sleep aids impact my overall sleep patterns.

I've found it to be a very useful tool for helping me figure out my sleep issues and improve them. Of course, YMMV.

Weezy

Thanks for your responses.
I'm not expecting miracles with the ZEO, just want something that will give me objective, repeatable, results regarding the quality of my sleep. I pretty much have my apnea under control, but still suffer from non-restorative sleep, with PLMD being causative or a contributing factor. Since my next course of therapy will likely involve drugs, I want to be able to measure the results as best I can without going to live at the sleep center.
Since positive responses in this thread and others outweighed negative, and since the ZEO was on sale yesterday for $159 with free shipping (back to $199 today), I ordered one. At the very least, I understand it makes a great alarm clock.
Thanks again,
Jay

I may get one of these too. I know it can't do what the expensive hardware at a sleep lab can do (wouldn't that be nice!), but it would be more data about my brain waves than I have now. Does anyone know of any other relatively low-cost EEGs? Maybe something meant for biofeedback?

Otter, I haven't been able to find anything "off the shelf". I keep reading about promising new products, but they just don't ever seem to come to market. Or, they're so outrageously expensive as to be out of the question. I have seen mention of people using used EEG equipment, but that would require far greater skill and resources for me to adapt than I have. So..., the ZEO.
BTW, if you do buy one, type "FREESHIP" in the coupon box to get free shipping.
