I need SD Card reader

Post by dinycat » Sat Feb 22, 2014 8:45 pm

Sounds simple to buy an SD reader to stick in my computer so I can read my results, but there are hundreds of them! I don't know anything about MMC's, pocket flashes, IOGear, MS, CFs and all the rest that are listed.

Can someone recommend one for my Toshiba PC that uses Windows 7? I understand they're cheap, but with shipping, it adds up, so I don't want to get the wrong thing. I'm computer illiterate, don't you know.

Thank you.

Get whatever is cheap. All the other formats are extra in terms of what you need to do.
That is, read an SD card.

All of them will do that if they do more than one format. I presume there are some dedicated to a different type of card than the SD card but I haven't seen one.

I use SUNPACK 72-in-1 high speed card reader because I also need to read a CF card.
If you have a Dollar General store or some such, they frequently have SD readers for less than $10.

I assume that you have a USB port on your Toshiba to plug it into. All the inexpensive readers use the USB port on your computer.

Best Buy or Walmart both have card readers for under $10

The link you put up is for an SD Card. It is an SD Card Reader that is being asked about, not the card itself.

But the same protocol exists. Just type in SD Card Reader into Google, and you'll see all you want and more.

Staples has an SD only reader for $3.49 that should do the job.

Toshiba PC that uses Windows 7
Does your PC not already have an internal SD card reader?

I can't find a reader on my Toshiba, no. But tomorrow I'm off to the nearby Staples.

Thanks, all!

There should be a slot on the side or back of your computer that the SD card slides into. I have an older Dell Laptop and it's got one. Check again before you buy a reader.

The SD card slots can be in weird locations. I've seen them on the sides and in the front just under the edge.

The computer I use most often has one on the front left just under the lip that's almost impossible to see if it has the blank insert installed.

If you'll post the model of your Toshiba I'll see if I can find the manual for it and see if it has a SD reader already.

Now days most printers have card reader slots built in that can be used by the computer.

You are a nice guy. What tipped me off was Windows 7. By the time that OS was being installed, most computers came with an internal SD card reader.

And you are correct about the slots sometimes being hard to find.

Sleepless and Bama

I can't believe it, but I found the slot on the front of my computer, just under the lip. You were right, and not only did you save me a little bit of money, but more importantly a trip to the store.

This site is absolutely the most beneficial thing I've run into lately. Humans can accomplish so much when they get together, no?

I hope someday to be knowledgeable enough to be the one who helps some other newbie.

Many thanks.

Glad you found it.

Be aware that some slots the card just plugs into and some you have to push the card into until it "clicks" in and then you have to press it in again until it partially "pops" out to remove it.

Well, this is embarrassing.

I've had my Dell laptop for 3 yrs, and I'm on my second $15 "52 in one" card reader, and thanks to this thread I checked and...yup, sd slot, right there.

One never knows what useful thing one might learn next. Thanks for the info, and the question.
