Forum time zone question about DST box

Post by Pugsy » Mon Mar 12, 2018 6:25 am

Hey guys....check your user control panel board preferences and see if you have the little box for DST in effect.
I don't have it and my times have been off since the DST spring forward.
I don't know if it was just me or everyone else too.
I had that box prior to the forum software upgrade.

I have temporarily adjusted it to make it correct by altering my time zone to make things line up.

I don't have it under Board Preferences. That's where it would be, right?
Edit: I noticed that the time shown for my post was for Chicago, so I changed the time zone to America/New York (I'm in the Eastern part of the country). I think that fixed it for me.

There used to be a little box right next to or under (I forget) the Time Zone choice for us to check if DST is something that where we live is affected by the DST changes.

It's gone now...I also just changed my time to a choice one hour earlier to make it correct.

It's really not that big of a deal but I was having trouble figuring out when the spammer was here this morning and posting.
It was hard to wrap my head around it at 5 AM my time. I wasn't awake enough.

Here's the screen where it used to be and I put a little red circle in the general area where the box used to be.

If no one else has the box then it isn't just me and I will have bendauphinee check on it.

Not the easiest format to figure out--but I did anyway.
Sadly, not everyone here is a geography geek.

Agreed! The time zone drop-down menu is anything but intuitive. I've never seen a zone location listing like that one before.

As a (retired) cartographer, I have seen it before.
It is a more international thing.
Maybe an indication of location of source programming.
Remember that daylight saving is considered STUPID by most of the world.

Cartographer--now that sounds an interesting occupation.
I discovered that the drop-down list is taken from the "tz database" which is "primarily intended for use with computer programs and operating systems" (per Wikipedia). [tz = time zone]
So, that explains the raised level of nerdiness to it.

Apparently the little box for DST is no longer on this software version.

Instead select a big city close to where you live or in your time zone and it should auto adjust.

I had assumed you had already tried that and DST was wrong.

No, it's what I did to make the time correct early this morning before anyone in charge got here.
Then once someone in charge got online I asked if the missing box was a bug or planned and was informed the DST box is no longer a feature and now we just choose the city close to use (no more using UTC plus or minus hour time choices for us in the USA).
My understanding is that now when the DST changes are made we no longer have to make the change in our board preferences to reflect DST being on or off which is something we used to have to do in the past. It's going to change automatically for us once we have the correct choice made.

So what I did by accident just to make the board time that I see match up with my time just happens to be what everyone has to do now and we no longer have to manually click a DST box to turn it on or off because now there is no box.

It's common. country/major city in time zone.
