CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
I had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery two weeks ago. Question for CPAP users....how soon after Nissen surgery did you use your CPAP? Did you experience any new issues with CPAP after surgery?
Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
That would be a question I'd ask my Doctors, not a forum. We are all different, so are our doctors. Jim

Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
As a general rule, the GERD surgery should improve tolerance of CPAP, and the violent negative pressure created by an apnea would be more likely to do damage than the mild positive pressure of CPAP. I believe many would be instructed to use CPAP immediately after surgery to prevent complications with the surgery itself.
That said, I'm with Jim--the surgeon's office should be able to give you a rule of thumb based on your specific surgery and circumstances. They might be more likely to answer the phone if your DME RRT or sleep doc or primary made that phone call.

Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
I think Aerophagia could cause a problem. Bloating may have an negative effect on the wrap early in the healing. I agree with checking with your doctor. I had the surgery 16 years ago, but I was not on CPAP at the time.

Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
OP asks today--TWO WEEKS after the surgery.
There is much we do not know . . .
Check the post-op sheet given when you were sent home.
Did you read that? Can you find it?

True. But also, OP gives no hint as to OP's experiences but merely asks what others' experience has been.

Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
My post op sheet does not mention about CPAP. I asked my surgeon before leaving hospital and in a very unsure manner he said that maybe I shouldn’t use it for 2 - 4 weeks so I didn’t risk putting undue pressure on my wrap. The manner in which he answered gave myself and my wife the impression he was merely making a suggestion and wasn’t basing anything on medical fact. My CPAP provider would not offer advice either way. Since it has been two weeks I was wanting to find out what other’s that had the surgery experience had been.
My pressure was at an 11 but I was thinking about cutting it back just to be safe. Two weeks without has been terrible. My wife recorded my “sleep” without the CPAP and it was very concerning - almost like I was gasping for air.

If you need XPAP at 11 cm, how could anything lower be safe I would be asking the Real Doctor, and sleeping in a recliner with a neck support, until I got a real answer. Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know the question I would ask first:
Which of the two groups (following) is more likely to have the greatest correlation of use?
1) CPAP users who have undergone Fundoplication surgery, or
2) Recipients of Fundoplication who use CPAP.
If you think 1 is correct, then you may have asked the most appropriate group. However, if you think 2 is more likely, try the following:
First, go to https://www.healingwell.com/gerd/ This will take you to the GERD subgroup of the healingwell forum (healingwell has several subgroups for specific categories of medical condition)
Once there, (using the search box in the upper right) search for "fundoplication cpap." This will take you to several related threads in the GERD subgroup. If this works for you, join and ask your question there.

Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
Jim...I agree that using a pressure less than optimal is dangerous, but not using CPAP at all is worse. When I had my Septoplasty, I was told not to use my CPAP fror 7 days...I cheated and after the 3rd day I resumed CPAP and lowered my pressure from 12 to 8 figuring that it would stop "some" if not all events.Goofproof wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 6:12 pmIf you need XPAP at 11 cm, how could anything lower be safe I would be asking the Real Doctor, and sleeping in a recliner with a neck support, until I got a real answer. Re: CPAP after Nissen Fundoplication Surgery
Before XPAP, I had a wisdom tooth extracted, a root broke off and the Dr. cut his way in and extracted the root. That evening I taught my son how to blow a trumpet, I had forgot about the stitches, it was not a wise decision.
