Timeline of CPAP machine releases and what’s coming down the pipeline.

Post by fasttimes » Mon Apr 16, 2018 1:28 am

I’ve got pretty good insurance, and they will pay for a new machine every two years. I currently have a RESMED airsense 10 which is supposed to be the Cadillac. I’ve had it for over two years and it still works great, but was curious about how often companies release new models. The RESMED 9 (forgot the version) was out for several years before the 10. Is there an 11 coming? If I had an idea of when new models came out, that would be extremely helpful in making a decision.

There are always newer product in the pipeline, it how business is done. The product will have new hyped features, but come with higher prices, shorter life spans and more things to go wrong, that's progress in the world of profit. Jim

FYI: All my XPAPS were built in 2005, The first one is still working every night 8 to 10 hours a night. The Second was bought new has 200 hours on it now (Testing time), and the third bought used 350 hours. In a few years I may have to use number 2 or 3, I doubt it.

I'll take reliability over new every time!

Good question. I've wondered about this myself. AS10 was released in 2014 and we knew it was coming several months before it made it to market. You'd think there would be some news in the not too distant future.

In addition to the *excellent* thread that BTS referred to, there's one very important fact that is very often overlooked about new models coming out...

THEIR DEVELOPMENT IS SECRET,
THEY DON'T TELL THE PUBLIC (us).

In manufacturing, a healthy R&D department is always working on future models.
It is not uncommon to hold some features back for later models;
as the strategy is to always leave the suckers wanting more.
(((Every make of cell phone, car, TV, etc.)))
Marketing. Meh.

The travel machine probably counts as a release.

The ST-A is another added release on the ResMed page ... https://www.resmed.com/us/en/healthcare ... 0-sta.html

You either get what's newest when you can/need to; or duplicate what you have
so you can use the proprietary accessories you already have.
It's a personal choice, based on your own values.

I like how the highlight the alarm light... without saying what it is.... much sleeker than the alarm module on the S9 ST-A

Well, if the companies are reading, here's my wish list for a new model.

1. Some easy-to-use, but much more comprehensive sleep tracking software. I prefer complete nightly feedback on every aspect of my night's breathing (event types, duration, leaks, respiratory data, you name it, I would like it. And, I would like the data presented both graphically, tablular, and summarized in any slice of days that I choose to analyze. Further, it would be conveniently savable, in easily accessible files, and provide the capability to create useful reports.) Sleepy head is fairly useful, the manufacturers could come up with something quite powerful instead of abbreviated summary info or , even less useful, a smiley face.

2. I think that there could be a need for a new data piece, that of "head orientation during sleep". It would be useful, for example, if an apneic patient could relate sleeping orientation to events and could adjust sleep habits accordingly. The headgear would need to have some sort of sensor, and the machine would need to be able to detect the info.

3. An optional Li Ion battery, attachable as a lightweight, compact module, and that would automatically take over for one night's worth of power loss. I'm not a major fan of the aftermarket ones that I currently have. (Somewhere)

If they're gonna do that, throw in an O2/pulse sensor too.

You're missing the point. The request was to put an accelerometer on the mask, then they might as well put a couple diodes to read SpO2/bpm *on the mask*, and integrate that data, as well as responding to any low SpO2.
