What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
This article highlights the possible link between the two conditions.
The very last paragraph says that CPAP usage (and by inference other successful treatments), might reduce the risk or severity of Gout, but that remains to be studied.

Seriously, Julie?
DH gets a lot wrong, but you are automatically assuming that.
Read this, which has a higher standard than DH https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2654686/

from the conclusion of: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4821424/Despite these suggestive data, it is unknown whether sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of incident gout and if so, what the magnitude of association is.
Always better to look at later research.

Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
I wasn't disputing the connection, only that the incidence of gout is so small relative to other things apnea does effect, and therefore why even bring it up, but I guess I could have been clearer and mentioned a rare disease rather than dandruff.

There are those of us that agree with you to the extent D/H. is on our foe list and we have learned to not generally follow the links he provides in thread starters.

Things you listed in response implied otherwise: hangnail? Don't try to justify such crap.
For those of us that have dealt with gout, I assure you, it's a point of interest if treatment via xPAP may affect it in a good way, definitely if you're starting out as I am: it gives another big plus for committing to compliance long-term.

This was an article from what appears to be a reasonably reliable source.
Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
Yeah, but if you have it, it is significant and gout is not rare. Roughly 8 million suffer from it in the US. Compare that to the estimated 22 million that have or may have sleep apnea. Gout can damage your heart and kidneys, did you know that? I didn't until 2 years ago. However, I can say that my numbers haven't really changed in 5 years - 2 years before getting cpap and 3 years of continuously using a cpap. I've managed to do without meds for 25 years now by avoiding triggers, but many (especially men) have such high levels that medication is required permanently. It is that group where you would see an effect, if indeed there is one.

Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
i don't read articles written by so called experts and posted by those that go out and search for discussion starters. i've had gout which comes from high uric acid brought on by purines for roughly 25 years. no attacks for about 15 years after starting medication and quitting purine producing foods. I also have had apnea diagnosed 29 years ago. effective cpap treatment started about 10 yrs ago. i have very good doctors that i completely trust. none of them have suggested a connection between my gout and my apnea. it never crossed my mind either. not interested.

Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
It's click-bait for medically interested people. Doesn't mean that the information is false, but since the site doesn't indicate WHO they are, any articles from them should be viewed with suspicion. That said, articles from that site seem to include references, so you can always follow those up or simply review legitimate sites for more info.
Greatunclebill, if you claim what you do in the first line, then why click on anything D.H. posts unless its in your interest to bully and minimize others? You didn't read the article, so why would you post? Just foe DH and you can move on.

Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
I interpreted your statement below as directly insulting to D.H. If it was not intended that way, then I apologize. Typed responses don't always have the cue for intention. As to your doctors, it is doubtful your docs would have brought it up because (a) it's preliminary research and (b) you are already being treated for apnea, so why bring it up? More important things going on at your appointments.greatunclebill wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 11:06 amI'll worry about what i post, what i click on, who i foe and why. i suggest you do the same. i'm not bullying anyone. i just gave my personal experience on the subject. who's the real bully here?

At least DH spelled "effects" correctly.
That is something.
And we are now aware that gout is not a thing of the past.
(I already knew)

Re: What are the effects of sleep apnea on the risk of Gout?
Hi All,
I am newly diagnosed with sleep apnoea, and have suffered quite a few years with gout.
I am hoping once getting my sleep under control it will lessen my gout attacks.
Here's hoping!
