It seems XPAP use causes faulty irrational logic in what XPAP causes in some people's lives. You don't think they may have been infected with Irrational Thinking long before XPAP use. Jim

The major problem with hearing aids is the cost. A pair can easily cost $5000. Analog aids are/were cheaper but don't work nearly as well as digital. Don't know if analog ones are still available.
Check out Costco, same, or more features, 1699 or so.

CPAP use has no connection or correlation with tinnitus, at least as far as current research goes.

I have tinnitus and have had it for 20 years now. My ringing is specifically in the ranges of 4khz - 7.5khz. If you want a sample of what I hear, 24/7, 365 days a year, then check here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=NMOlA9D29z0

I hear that sound every single waking moment of my life. It is difficult for me to understand people that are speaking to me at a table in a restaurant, or in any situation where there is background noise.

What a test showed was that I was essentially deaf in those ranges, most likely from my time in the military. Further research is beginning to show that tinnitus may be a result of the brain itself implanting sound in those ranges where one is deaf in, as there is supposed to be sound there anyway. They just don't know *why* the brain does this, or how to stop it.

CPAP use has had zero effect on my tinnitus, for ill or good.
My tinnitus is military related also. Oddly enough when I got hearing aids it got much better. I suppose the amplified ambient sound helps mask the tinnitus. Also made understanding conversation in noisy environments much much easier.

If they work for you, a good place for name brand hearing aids is Costco.
They also have their own branded ads which are currently Rexton aids, one generation old. The Costco brand aids are currently $1599 per PAIR. You get 3 year warranty & free service at any Costco in the US. Although all Costco hearing centers have the equipment for Real Ear Measurement when fitting, many do not use it that way.

I now travel 2 hours to a Costco that does Real Ear Measurement.

Thanks for the tips on the hearing aids, I've thought about looking into them for a long time.

I know that hearing aid technology has come a long way in relation to tinnitus, unfortunately, the cost is also prohibitive. I certainly want to continue to watch them though.

None of the hearing aids sold at Costco have tinnitus masking.
A couple of years ago I tried a set that had the masking and found that feature worthless for me.

Yeah, apparently there is still a long way to go in terms of technology advancements.

EDIT: Starkey makes aids that are specific to tinnitus. Expensive.

Hearing aids are expensive, in deed. The ones we have have helped my wife and me both with our tinnitus. For us, it was worth the expense. I will try what the VA has to offer the next time I need new ones. They have finally started using digital hearing aids from Unitron.

Widex just announced hearing aids available this summer that have fuel cells instead of batteries. They claim a 20 second methanol recharge lasts all day.

I know 312 battery life on hearing aids seems to get shorter and shorter as new features are introduced. My new aids get about 3 days. My 3 year old ones got about 5. Rechargeable gets more and more enticing.

I tried rechargeable batteries with my new hearing aids. Evidently, they had a batch of bad batteries. One hearing aid would go all day on a charge, but the other would only work about eight hours and then quit working. I gave the rechargeable batteries back and went to regular batteries. One battery lasts seven days and the other one lasts eight days. One hearing aid is blue tooth enabled to work with my cell phone. That is the one that uses a battery every seven days.

You must have aids with the size 13 batteries. My aids with the size 312 brown tab batteries only last 3 days..

Just because you didn't experience the problem, doesn't mean others did not. He had tinnitus, now he doesn't. Very likely cpap has some influence on some people if his simple solution resulted in ending the tinnitus.

I do sympathize as I'm in the same boat. I've had tinnitus since I was 6 and it worsened a few years ago as a side effect of medication. It's always there and just like you, interferes with hearing people as well as sleeping I finally had to get a hearing aid a couple of months ago (saving up for the second, those suckers are expensive!).

FWIW, the newer Miracle Ear hearing aids also provide masking.

It's a miracle if that brand works at all; likewise Beltone.
Twenty years behind REAL hearing aids.
See an audiologist for the real cause, then go to Costco for the best prices.

Some Costco Hearing Centers have audiologists. They all do hearing tests with audiologists or licensed hearing instrument Specialists.
The better branches actually do a full test with speech recognition and a full fitting with Real Ear Measurement.

In my personal experience, some of my worst hearing tests & adjustments have been from audiologists. One of the worst also teaches audiologists.

The care & skill of the professional matters more than a degree.

Has a free test with the speech recognition at my local Costco last month...

That "repeat the word" thing is deceptively hard, with no other cues to determine what the word is.
