At home sleep test and treatment?

Post by californiagolfer » Fri Apr 13, 2018 7:40 am

Hi! I'm pretty new to the sleep apnea world, but trying to learn more! It's hard for me to take time to see multiple doctors and I found some online places that will issue me an at-home sleep test, and, if I have sleep apnea, issue me a CPAP without having to see a doctor. Places like Easybreathe or Singluar Sleep. Has anybody tried these? Are they reputable? Thanks!

In Canada it is becoming less common to have an out of the home sleep study done. Clinics are switching to at home overnight studies done with equipment such as the Philips Alice NightOne. If you google it you will find information and videos on how it works. I was diagnosed with that type of system. It is not a very comfortable experience, at least for me, but I do believe it give a credible analysis of your sleep apnea situation. However for the service provided by those particular companies I can't comment. My test was handled through a local sleep lab that gives you the equipment and you bring it back for analysis in the morning.

So...are you in California...if so...where. I may know someone in California that can help you get that home study that I trust more than the places that want to do the home study and sell you cpap equipment out of the same door.
Screams conflict of interest to me...and while it might not be happening...it still bugs me.

Do you ever get around the Elk Grove area?
And do you have a doctor or NP or someone who would be willing to just write and order for a home sleep study?
Doesn't have to be a sleep doctor...your primary care doctor would be sufficient if he would just do it.

Home studies...there are different levels of data collection...called channels.
The more channels or more data collected...the more comprehensive the test...or better.
And the cost goes up.

I don't know how comprehensive the home tests sent out at the websites you mentioned are...like is it just a pulse ox test or is it a more comprehensive test. I don't like just going by a pulse ox test...just because someone doesn't have a drop in oxygen doesn't mean no OSA.

Ah, I don't really ever get to Elk Grove. Thank you for the offer though. Good to know about the different channels. I'll definitely be looking for more data. I think from their websites, the home tests use fairly standard equipment (not sure on channel volume)

My PCP gave me a "script" for an at home sleep test. My Insurance and hospital network are the same so I just called the Sleep Clinic of the closest hospital and they set me up with a home machine and did the test. It was like any other lab work and got a report back.

I then contacted my network's Sleep/Pulmonary/Lung Center and set up an Appointment. For some though you may need a referral from your PCP but our plan doesn't require it.

Got the appt and they then contacted the DME and a week later I had a machine. I'll be back in a few weeks for my 90 followup as per my insurance requires.

No...you can still do the Elk Grove place...you don't have to go there.
I was just wondering if you ever went there maybe take one step out of the process.

I am in Missouri and I could use this guy if I needed or wanted to. Just have an additional step involved when doing it long distance.

Do you have any doctor, NP or someone who can write a RX that would be willing to do one for you for a home sleep study?
If you do..we can use the place I know of.
Just need a referral from anyone who can legally prescribe or write orders or RXs.

Makes sense if you have the time for the appointments. I'm trying to avoid going to PCP for a script, then going to sleep clinic to get the machine, then going to see the Sleep Center for treatment then going back for compliance. Obviously, I want the best treatment, just trying to evaluate if I can do it with a process that fits easier into my lifestyle

Got it. I do have a doctor who can write a RX, but I would have to go see them first. Haven't done it yet. What's the name of this place/guy so I can check it out?
