Irritability/anger

Post by Gbercier » Sat Aug 15, 2020 8:31 pm

I am 3 months into my CPAP and am experiencing extreme agitation and irritability...very severe.... what's happening and should I quit using my CPAP?

It's not the cpap.
[[[ Edit: of course, the WRONG machine could be at fault.]]]

We are all a bit upset, because, the pandemic.
I am thinking about asking my doctor to renew my "chill pill", at least until after the election.
Hopefully, I will not need it after.

I think if one isn't more irritable lately, one is seriously out of touch.

Could you tell us more? How well are you sleeping? Are you feeling rested during the day? What is your AHI with CPAP use?

It'd also be great if you would fill out your profile with information about your machine and your mask. That way it'll be visible to other forum members whenever you post.

Optimizing PAP pressures can sometimes help with irritability.

(Whether this forum always reflects that fact or not  )

Just for my own mental health, I avoid the news except for a few minutes a day.
That kind of helps.
Crap happens, whether I'm watching it or not.
Skipping the commercials helps a little.

I will take it that you have only a plain cpap rather than an auto...? Any particular reason for that? Autos give you more options for therapy and they can do plain cpap if needed, but cpaps only do cpap.

Bad sleep can have a sedating effect, dulling one's perceptions and emotions. Sleepiness clouds the mind and distracts from the realities of existence. That can become addicting in it's own very real way.

Good sleep wakes us up to what our life is and makes us see and feel much more acutely. It can be disconcerting, since even positive changes bring a type of stress. It is similar to how it can be painful for a drunk to get sober. It takes support and focus and a bit of psychological problem-solving, but it is always worth it to put in the work.

Feel free to vent here. That helps me. Or pick on Zonker, or something. But always choose good sleep over bad, even when it makes emotions stronger to the point of being almost overwhelming.

On a serious note, I agree with making sure your treatment is doing its best for you. Having settings not quite optimal can be detrimental to sleep and mood.

Are you on any meds that might need to be reassessed after starting cpap? What it takes to treat asleep deprived body might be different with a rested body. Lots of things change in us with proper sleep. We had a young lady on the forum several years ago who was diagnosed as biplolar and was on meds and doing fine, but once she started CPAP her bipolar symptoms got bad. Ended up her rested self didn't need the same meds as before. Just mentioning this in case you are on anything you might need to review with your doctor. Good luck with things.

I stopped taping and slowly got more tired and irrititable. Not to suggest that's the issue, but adjusting therapy and eliminating any sleep disturbances may help.
Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"
