Why am I getting conflicting sleep study results?

Post by Bettyyamaha » Sun Apr 22, 2018 7:51 am

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2011. In December 2017 my CPAP broke. Medicare will replace your CPAP every 5 years. I thought it was a no brainier but since my doctor is not the prescribing Dr she wanted a new sleep study. The latest sleep study said I didn't have sleep apnea. They told me to loose weight and to get some kind of mouth guard. How can I go from "Severe sleep apnea" to no sleep apnea. Since my machine broke in December i haven't had a decent night's sleep, I wake up with a headache and IF my boyfriend sleeps in bed with me he is either waking me up because of my snoring or because I've stopped breathing. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do?. Thanks

Actually, you can order a CPAP on Amzon, Ebay, Secondwindcpap.com, or a host of other sites. You'll need to pay out of pocket.

If your old machine was data capable, you should be able to show that you used it. Regardless, you might be able to persuade the doctor to prescribe it anyhow, since you're used it before and feel rotten without it.

I suggest getting a reasonably up-to-date model, not the same one you had before.

Is your doctor in an HMO, or Medicare (dis)Advantage?
Thanks to a "sleep study" done by an HMO,
I suffered NINETEEN YEARS with untreated apnea.
Rather than fight the (crooked) system, get treated;
even if you have to self-pay. IT IS YOUR LIFE.

Do you have a copy of that so-called negative report? Often when that happens it is clear the sleep study is what my sleep doctor calls "technically suboptimal", meaning not enough of the needed sleep stages and/or positions to give a definitive result. There's a difference between not being able to capture diagnostic criteria during the study and not having sleep apnea. To "prove" you don't have it, the report should demonstate significant time in sleep, and the potential worst case scenario of REM while supine. As a side note, another factor in underappreciated apneas on a sleep study can be if one happens to have active periodic limb movements unrelated to respiratory effort during a study, as they can mask apnea events, giving a much lower AHI than if the person would have slept without those movement disruptions. Until you resolve this, try to stay off of your back when you sleep. Unless your insurance pays 100% you may be as well off to buy a used machine. If you know the settings on your old machine, you could set a new(er) one to those same settings for now.

False positives on a sleep test are *VERY* rare...

False negatives, however, not so rare, I hear about them frequently.

If they don't want to replace the machine, (find a different doctor?) pick one up second hand off craigslist, or from grayghost4 (or someone else here on the forum) and get back to sleeping well.

As one that could possibly be dealing with Medicare soon...and might not be able to get a machine...

Now that I know the ASV type machines work for me...I'll buy one. I will not be sleeping with my DreamMachine ever again.

I will pay for it sleep well if I have to. I've taken two naps today (total about 3 hours) and for the 1st time in a very long time i believe I'm well rested.
