OT: Nano Hearing Aids

Post by greatunclebill » Mon Nov 26, 2018 3:50 pm

I've been seeing these ads for nano hearing aids everywhere. Has anybody looked into them or bought them?

Poor spelling in an ad makes me very suspicious of the quality.
One can buy cheap gadgets anywhere, but they can do nothing about wind noise,
background noise, and feedback.
You are welcome to try a cheap amplifier, but do not let it color your view
of GOOD instruments. Hearing loss is more complex than many believe.
Even the heavily advertised brands are far removed from the good stuff.
Most of those languish in a drawer, rather than enhancing life.

Hearing aids are like any audio equipment. A $29 radio will never sound as good as a $2000 stereo. If all you need is amplification of all sounds, then they might work for you. How ever, if you only need certain frequencies amplified, or various frequencies require various amplification, then they probably will not work. I see you're retired Air Force. Can you get hearing aids through the VA. I used to get mine from them, but the last time I got some from them, they did not meet my hearing requirements and the medical insurance I had at the time provided an allowance for hearing aids. I have purchased my own ever since. I am going back to the VA next week for another hearing test. They are currently issuing the same brand hearing aid as I am wearing. They are probably last years model versus this years model which I have.

Are there hearing aid forums that are the equivalent of CPAPTalk?

I have read that hearing aids are quite a racket in terms of mark up, so it is plausible that you can get useful quality hearing aids for some types of hearing loss at a much lower price. But I have to think a check with an audiologist to establish your level of hearing loss would be a good baseline.

There is a new legal category of hearing aids that don't require a prescription. Consumer Reports has a write up on them, but the nanos were not among the models they tested, and the devil is in the details with these sort of things.

Those "over the counter" aids are just permitting the current low quality hearing assistance products to use the hearing aid name.

Low cost "hearing aids" currently are not capable enough for many people. A few years ago I actually tried some hearing aids you could program yourself if you wished. They were less expensive than the brand name aids but not nearly as capable either. I paid significantly more that the link in the first posting.

That makes sense. I remember some ads in the past where they seemed to be bending over backwards to avoid the term, though the ads were for what seemed to be really crappy devices.

Go to Costco...Their basic hearing aids are $1795 pr...Top of the line $2495 pr. Great service, free hearing exams, 3 years warranty.

Second the recommendation for Costco. Even though they are expensive, they are much less so than a private audiologist and paying retail, and still offer quality. Saving money but not hearing well will not really be a cost-effective approach to life, as our senses matter a lot in our functioning. For very mild hearing issues, perhaps low-end hearing aids are worth trying, but most people in that category would just live with it, as I do with my 20/40 distance vision most of the time. But when I temporarily had an eye condition that made my vision awful, I would have paid a lot to correct it.

Your quality of hearing is linked directly to your general health and quality of life.
You deserve the best you can afford.
My only choice is Costco.
I can afford much better there than I could elsewhere.
Avoid anything aggressively promoted.
You will never get the value suggested by the price.

Costco is great for quality aids at the lowest prices anywhere.
In my experience the main factor in hearing aids is finding a good, caring provider. Costco provides all their branches withheld equipment to do the recommended Real Ear Measurement after fitting aids but not all branches use that feature.

You cannot look at the provider's certifications to determine competency. With Costco aids you are free to use a different branch for your service if you are dissatisfied with your initial service.

The referral from another local hearing aid user is the only way I know to find the best experience. Unfortunately I have not found somebody locally.
