Further, “it tends to be a bit of an ouch-y vaccine,” Dr. Schaffner cautioned.
In studies, most older recipients said they’d experienced pain, redness or swelling in their upper arms for a day or two after the shot, and 8.5 percent of those over age 70 deemed those symptoms uncomfortable enough to interfere with normal activities.
About half of those over age 70 reported more systemic side effects like fatigue, fever or aching joints, lasting one to two days. Physicians and pharmacists should prepare people for such reactions, Dr. Schaffner said.
“If people anticipate it, they’ll cope with it better. They’ll take a couple of Tylenol” — and not worry that something is seriously wrong.

We went to the local pharmacy to get the vaccine yesterday and they told us they have been out of it for a month, and can only get 10 shots at a time. No telling when they will get more. Also said there has been a national shortage.

Since the TWO doses need to be separated, but by a fairly narrow time frame,
limited availability might interfere with recommended application.
NICE.

My preferred pharmacist has a waiting list. He says anyone who gets the first dose, will go to the top of the list for a second dose. The second dose should be taken two to six months after the first dose.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sat May 26, 2018 1:14 pmSince the TWO doses need to be separated, but by a fairly narrow time frame,

Smart plan--not something I would expect from the pharmacies I have used.

I am getting the first dose at my next appointment in August. It will cost me nothing with my group policy actually.
I got chicken pox later in life (25), and the damn stuff almost killed me,....don't recall ever being so sick. Have had a couple of close friends get bouts of the shingles, and I would just as soon not find out if it's as bad as they said.

I got chicken pox at age 4, scratched it, got blood poisoning, was given penicillin, had bad reaction, almost killed me, spent 7 days, at home in a O2 tent. No Shingles, yet! Knock, Knock! Jim
I've never known anyone that had Shingles, hope it stays that way. I take 3,000 units of Vit "C" daily, I count on it to keep my imune system cooking.

I got pretty sick after this vaccination. I'm glad I had it when I was going to stay inside and do nothing anyway (marathoning on Netflix). Mine were not mild symptoms, but it is much like the flu. Much better today. I'm sure by tomorrow, I will be back to normal. Fyi, while not indicated on the sheet, my morning blood glucose reading was 40 points higher than usual.
I didn't take Tylenol for the headache because they had a thing a few years ago that taking such stuff actually reduced the effectiveness of vaccines in kids.

It's an anti-inflammatory. By preventing inflammation, nerves don't get squeezed (and then hurt). The problem with using it, as I mentioned in earlier post, is that it may reduce the effectiveness of the vaccination.

Re: Shingrix Vaccine - How much are you paying?
After hearing that my usual pharmacy had no shots available and no hope of getting them soon, I called around to see if I could find some other source. The third pharmacy I called had some available. The pharmacist told us that the shot would be covered by Medicare part D, and cost depended on how much drug coverage you had used so far. My shot cost $60 and my husband's cost $85.
As someone said before, I would rather pay than have shingles. I felt lucky to find a way to get the shots. Now we have to hope to get the second dose.

My son recently noticed that an unusual number of people
have a chicken pox scar right between their eyebrows.
I wonder how common a scar in that location is, and what bearing, if any,
might it have on the progression of the latent virus.

Apparently one of the side effects of Shingrix vaccine is a very sore arm. So, not to worry. It’s an expected effect.
In Canada they are charging 175 dollars but since I have US Medicare I’ll go to the states for it.
It supposedly has a 90% success rate compared to less than 50% for Zostavax. Worth the money to avoid that horrid condition.

It also thins the blood, so can lower swelling due to increased circulation.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Fri May 25, 2018 10:59 pmAspirin is an analgesic, which means it slightly relieves pain.
If you are lucky, it might be enough.

Unfortunately I will probably have to take this! I'm allergic to eggs so taking a vaccine is a bit traumatic for me, but this one seems necessary.
