Camping power options for Respironics PR System One REMstar APAP or Resmed AirSense 10 for Her APAP

Post by SleepySunflower » Wed May 22, 2019 11:26 pm

I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace my charging equipment. In 2003, I had a Respironics Aria LX CPAP. For using CPAP while camping, I got a Respironics #1001979 Shielded DC Power Cord System and a 100 Amp Hour 12V deep cycle marine battery per Respironics recommendation.

The Shielded DC Power Cord System contained:
Battery Adapter Cable with CAP Plug (#532209) - one ends has clamps that attaches to a 12V DC deep cycle marine battery, the other connects to the Shielded DC Cord (#1001956)
Shielded DC Cord (#1001956) - one end plugs into the CPAP machine, the other plugs into a standard cigarette lighter socket
DC Cord Replacement Fuses, 3 Amp (#T622056)
DC Power Cord Replacement Fuses, 5 Amp (#T532211)
DC Cord Replacement Fuses, 7 Amp (#T1008104)

I successfully used this set-up for car camping, but it's been a long time. It's been so long since I went camping that I don't recall if I used this setup with my old Philips Respironics PR System One REMstar Auto CPAP Machine with A-Flex (9-13 cm H2O), which is my backup machine. I just noticed that the Shielded DC Cord instructions state that "this DC power cord can only be used with the REMstar Systems for pressures of 11 cm H2O or lower."

Question 1: Can I power my PR System One REMstar Auto CPAP with the above Respironics #1001979 Shield DC Power Cord System & a 12V deep cycle marine battery for camping? (Just use my backup APAP set up for camping)

I recently got a new Resmed AirSense 10 For Her APAP with heated humidifier. I see that there is a ResMed DC Converter 24V 90W For AirSense™ 10 machines.

Question 2: Can I power my Resmed AirSense 10 For Her APAP with the Respironics #1001979 Shielded DC Power Cord System that I already have?

Question 3: Or, would I need to get the ResMed DC Converter 24V 90W For AirSense™ 10 machines to power my AirSense 10 For Her APAP?

Question 4: If I get the ResMed DC Converter 24V 90W for AirSense™ 10 machines, do I use a 12V deep cycle marine battery with it or would it be better to get a different battery?

I'd appreciate any help in figuring this out!

I'm pretty sure the power cord the the System One is unique to the System One. The input is straight 12V, so if the connector fits there's a good chance it will work. However, the warning that it is only for pressure under 11 makes me thing its undersized. The cable for the system one is heavy duty, fused at (I think) 8 amps, and is $24. It uses a "cigarette lighter socket."

The Resmed will need the 12-24 volt converter - about $85. It also plugs into a cigarette socket and runs fine on 12V.

Your marine battery is a bit dated - you should upgrade to a modern AGM - same lead-acid chemistry but sealed so that it can run upside down and safe for indoor use. Details of my recommended setup are in the link in my signature.

Thank you for your input, CapnLoki! For some reason, I have two different Respironics Shielded DC cords. One of them does fit into the System One power plug-in. I don't currently have the marine battery charged up so I can't test whether it'll work or not. I think my recorded usage only goes up to 10.9 cm H2O, but my memory could be off on that. If my existing Shielded DC cords do work with my old System One, I'm wondering if that'd suffice as I rarely go camping.

I'm thinking it'd probably be a good idea to get the ResMed converter and a modern AGM. The "Choosing a Battery" post is quite informative! I also appreciate the product links. Thank you for your advice!

100ah might be overkill depending on what you are doing.

For camping I'll use my Resmed P10 nasal pillow mask so I can reduce pressure and save battery. I'll I set my PR System one to a fixed 9cm and turn off humidifier. I unplug the unit from the battery during the day to make sure there is no unnecessary current draw and to avoid a fire while I'm away. Never know if the tent will leak or whatever while your away so better to be safe. I have a 68ah agm battery. I can run the cpap for 8 or 9 nights and only take the battery down to 50%. I recharge when I get home.

I also have a Resmed machine. From what I understand they use quite a bit more power than the PR machines. I believe it. I noticed even after I turn off my Resmed it is doing stuff. The fan will run for a while, cool down mode I believe. It also transmits data wirelessly. Turning on airplane shuts off data transmission. My PR machine that runs directly off of 12v is my go to camping machine now.
