Here's a study that tries to establish what a normal rate for brief arousals is by age:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2564772/

It has its limitations, but a good take-away is that brief arousals are a normal part of sleep.
That's brutal, so basically 10-25 arousals per hour and 7% SWS for me at 33, than 3% as you get older. No wonder older people are so tired all the time. Seriously though, this is terrible i guess im not that bad of a sleeper after all. I guess people wakeup multiple times a night and dont care or dont remember it.

Yep....we are doomed. I will be 72 in May and I feel every one of those years and it's a sad fact of life that even if I wasn't eat up with arthritis screwing up my sleep quality....I would have the old age crap screwing with my sleep as well.

But as I tell my 75 year old husband (who also has some old age sleep problems..especially the prostate thing) it's better than the alternative.
At least we wake up. Not waking up isn't so great either. That's kinda a permanent problem.

I don’t look at it that way. These numbers will include people who have good, refreshing sleep. In other words, brief arousals don’t by themselves doom us to the poor memory, mood, and energy that come with poor sleep.

Yeah I suppose with untreated sleep apnea it’s a double edged sword in that on top of additional arousals, there is also the oxygen deprivation.

True, I thought i had adrenal fatigue and the adrenaline surges were due to my blood sugar dropping at night. Strangely enough taking things like ashwaganda that would normally help with sleep made it worse. Working out made it worse at night, i still cant figure out why. My theory is that both ashwaganda and working out increased the amount of deep sleep and REM sleep and in generally related you more at night (including the airways) which means more events.
