Resmed Airsense 10 tank does not hold enough water! How do I get rid of the smell?

Post by Lattimere » Wed May 08, 2024 5:43 am

HI all I am new here. I have been struggling for a while now with my cpap machine and sleep. I have the Resmed Autosense 10 and while the machine generally works fine I have run out of water multiple times in the middle of the night. This morning I ran out after 5.5 hours. It could be just me but I think the tank is way to small and should definitely hold more water. The smell that is created when the water runs out is horrid to say the least. I was hoping someone may have some advice on two things; First, how can I get rid of the smell when this happens? It is so gross and I honestly don't know how it can be good for someone. The 2nd is I need options for a larger tank or accessory that will fill the the machine.

I just want some sleep and I have been struggling for a while. I have read a little and I have seen several people talk about mouth tape but this is something I can not use as I have a hard time breathing through my nose. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When you run out of water your empty water tub is like an empty pot on a hot stove...it burns. Very unusual to run out of water in 5 hours. I suggest you lower your humidityb setting and add a small room humidifier.. You must be in a very dry area to use that much water.

What is the ambient humidity in your bedroom?
What are your pressure settings?
What does your leak report look like?
What is your humidity setting?

Giant leaks blow the water away.

Tubs that have been boiled dry need a vinegar soak, a good toothbrush scrub, and a good rinse.

Remember that smell... it should wake you immediately... it does me.

The machine that keeps your tub filled is called CSpring and costs about 260$. It is better to fix your leaks than use this, leaking messes up your therapy and makes events harder to detect.

Are you aware that you get Mr Green smiley face up to 29% of the time being spent in large leak.
You don't get Mr Frowny red face until you spend 30 % or more of the time in large leak (above 24 L/min).

How much time do you spend with pressure above 10 cm?

At this point we need to recommend that you get the SD card out of your machine and examine/share the data. The best way I've found to share it is SleepHQ... it is a free website that enables you to a) view your data in hi-res and b) to share it in hi-res. The best way to *examine* it is Oscar, a free open-source program. Oscar is only shareable by taking screenshots but is better for home use. I put my data in both.

www.sleephq.com
www.sleepfiles.com/oscar

Both free. I recommend you start an account with SHQ and upload your system's SD card, then choose a recent night and share it here using the three dots at top right. Here's a recent night of mine:

Thank you for the info I will have to see if I can do that some how. Another question, how tight should my mask be? I feel if its too loose air gets out the top and blows into my eyes and then out the bottom when i breathe. So I generally have to tighten a fair amount in order to make sure it stays sealed to the point in the morning I have red lines across my face that take an hour or two to go away. Does it matter if I am a stomach sleeper?

Hopefully you turn your head to one side... depending on your mask, the exhaust ports are in front... and they must *never* be blocked, that's where your exhalations end up going.

Masks are meant to 'balloon' when fit properly... I find that tight on bottom and loose on top (for full-face) works for me. Not sure what mask you're using, the ports are in different places on different masks. Facing down, you've got the pillow working against you... it will tend to push the mask around... I work it so that the mask is more toward the down side and then let the pillow push it centered. Tightening the straps too tight defeats the 'ballooning' principle and makes the seal worse, requiring even more tightening, that may be where you are now.

Using the machine's Mask Fit menu selection, place the mask in place *without the straps* and move it around until you get a good seal with the lightest pressure... then try to replicate that with the straps. MF starts at the highest pressure allowed, so if it starts way high it will come down some, watch the screen. Turn it off after use.

So if we can see a SleepHQ graph we'll have your settings as well... and if you can put your machine and mask in your profile signature we won't have to ask about them.
