There's a couple of approaches:
1) Put the program CD or DVD and install it.
2) Go to the programs website and seach to see if it supports Vista
3) Google the program name and Vista and see what what you find.

I am migrating to Vista at this time. I've ran across a driver issue for my old Sound Blaster card, there is none. Firefox crashed when I installed it. I had to put on my old SysAdmin hat to get that one fixed.

Most of the mainstream software should work. Older hardware is likely not going to work. From what I have seen on the internet, software issues should be minimal. recent hardware should be okay, older hardware may be problematic. I have a Thrustmaster Couger setup that I am not finding driver for. Falcon4 is not looking too good as well...

WRT sql, are you talking a SQL server, or something else?
