Anyother problem .. maybe..

Post by ddpelp » Sun Apr 15, 2007 9:34 pm

This group has such a wide different experienced group of folks I want to ask a question about a problem that has returned for me since start of CPAP therapy. (along with a change of meds) NOTE: I am calling my primary care doctor in the morning but sure would like some of your experiences here.

My main hope is to rule out the CPAP therapy

I have had a condition for years known as SVT (supra ventricular Tachycardia). This type of Tachycardia causes the heart rate to jump into high gear with a resting heart rate soaring to 150 or higher. I have had it for about 20 + years and it has been under very good control I take one pill a day and only would notice papiltations if and when I might forget my daily meds.. late the next day.

Recently starting last week I have started having symptoms of SVT coming back at a regular rate in fact actually more often then I have had before. I do know the feeling very well the doctor told me years ago just remember you feel like you are having a heart attack but you are not. SVT is the top of the heart chambers and while not good and if untreated can cause problems but the other type of tachycardia (the lower chamber) will kill you )..
anyway, at first years ago the doctor (a card doc) prescribed 1 of the pills 3 times a day. After a while I found only one was needed per day and he said if that works that is fine but he was surprised that low dose worked. Worked for well over 20 yrs

Ok fast forward to the last two weeks. I started CPAP therapy almost the exact same day my primary doctor started me on a new diabetes med call Januvia and i was started at the max dose 100 mg /day. I feel, at least I am guessing after doing some internet searching that THIS new med is the real cause of my heart palpitations not the CPap therapy.

had I started one or the other by itself I would have a better idea which is causing the flare up of SVT however over the weekend the only thing I could do to get back control on the SVT events was to go back to my long ago 3 pills per day. ..

Opinions?? Can CPAP cause the SVT events to come back like gang busters? I do not see how.. but.. dunno I do know I feel much much better with the CPAP machine

On the searches on the interest I see this new diabetic drug has only been around since last October,2006 I think in their write up they claim nothing really related to palpitation but one web site did mention fast heart rate but also it is so new who knows..

??

I, too, have had SVT for at least 20 years. I went quite awhile before starting medication, but have had it under control for at least the last dozen years or so. I started out taking 80 mg of Verapamil every day, but it gradually increased to 240 mg where it has been for at least 8 years. And like you I am not aware of any irregular beats or fast beats unless I forget to take my medicine.

It so happens that the night of my sleep study was one of those nights and the technician was alarmed at the heart behavior until I explained what was going on.

Thinking back I do remember some increased "activity" when I first started therapy for my sleep apnea. It occurred for just a few minutes when I first laid down at night for no more than a few days and it wasn't much more than a little extra "rumbling". I have not experienced any problems since then.

I don't know anything about the new diabetes medicine you mentioned, but I hope you can get the situation worked out.

Linda..
thanks for the reply. Yes mine WAS well controlled .. but the last weeks has been terrible .. I have a call into both the sleep doctor's nurse and the primary care doctor's nurse. I did stop the Januvia and went back to the med I was using in place of it see if it goes away. again thanks for reply I just wish I had not changed two major items in my life ie the new med and CPAP .
