Introduction/Rant

Post by Rex » Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:42 pm

Greetings. I have been a CPAP user for about 15 years now. I started out with a Remstar...model escapes right now, and finally after running that one in the ground, received a "new" Remstar Pro with C-Flex.
What a piece of crap! I have went through 3 machines, had a loaner for 4 months, and the one i have now has been in my closet for 6 months with the mysterious E24 error, which no one wants to address in layman terminology so I can fix it myself, since I cannot get the entity that sold me the thing to do anything.
Don't get me wrong. CPAP is most likely the reason I'm still alive. I am very thankful for the technology as it has given me quality of life that at one time was gone. Unfortunately, those days are returning. I'm stuck using a 15 year old machine I mentioned above. I'm sure the settings aren't correct and I know I'm not getting needed sleep.
I have advocated CPAP for years, sharing my story with friends that I know need help with Apnea.
But I am to say the least discouraged with REMSTAR.
I joined this forum so I might glean some information.
Thank You

Call Respironics directly yourself. I had a sheister DME supplier as well, but when I called Resmed I was told to take it back to my DME, it "would" be replace. Interestingly, my DME supplier had a "change of heart" and replaced it. I can't imagine that Respironics would do any less. Unless, of course, the two year warranty has run out. Still, its worth a phone call.

Just keep in mind when you call Respironics that you can catch more flies w/honey than you can w/vinegar. It wouldn't hurt to tell them how pleased you were w/your first Remstar and how long it lasted.

Did your insurance pay for any portion of the cost of this machine??? Call them as well. They may put some pressure on your DME supplier for you.

So you haven't had another sleep study in these 15 years??? Might be a good idea to get another done.

Or if that is how you got this "new" machine is by order of your sleep doctor, have you tried enlisting his help w/the DME supplier? He may want to change his referrals from this DME to another. And he may just put some pressure on this DME supplier as well.

Sounds like you have more of a provider problem, than a Remstar problem. If I were you and had my script, I would go to https://www.cpap.com/ and order a Remstar APAP, (Classic Tank), and HH if needed, buy the software and reader. Then you would have a good machine, and a good supplies you can count on.

Many people here can help you get your treatment back on track. Then you can devote your spare time into making the company who you have been dealing with a living Hell! Jim

Keep in mind that the machines you get are up to your DME. If they're as horrible as they sound, don't be convinced that those aren't refurbed/came to you broken anyway. The machine comes with a warranty, even if you're not renting it anymore. And if you ARE, then demand one that works. I know they should stand up for you, but they're obviously not going to. And if you ARE still renting it from them, then if it were me I'd return it and order online or at least find another DME that maybe somewhat cares.

Oh, and feel free to request a ResMed or Puritan Bennett machine since you've had such bad luck with your Remstar. They have great reputations around here, but there's nothing wrong with other machines.

An E-24 error on a REMstar Plus w/C-Flex is:

Problem: Flow offset

Corrective Action: Check for leaks or kinked internal tubing. Replace Main PCA.

Looks like you need to take/send it in to the DME/place where you bought it.
You might take the 2 screws out of the bottom and split the case, look for the barb being broke off the outlet port (from the inside). If you twist-on the hose and your silicone cups are tight it can twist the whole outlet port and break off the pressure transducer barb on the inside. It would give you a E-24 or E-25 error. When you turn on the machine it would rev high then shut off with the error.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Update: HI Folks. Well, I finally got my provider to switch out the faulty Remstar Pro with a new M-series. What a difference! I really like this machine. The humidifier reservoir is a much better system, and the C-Flex seems much more controlled.
Regarding the E-24 Error, he claims the supplier says that it is a moisture problem. Wit the 3 Remstar pros that i had, they did attempt modifications to the reservoir. The first one was to build in a shield above the water line. That didn't work. He showed me a flow control deal that they had come up with now.
I opted for the M series switch and am sure glad I did.

In defense of Remstar, I've used them for 4 years. The humidifier reservoir doesn't allow water into the machine unless it is mishandled.

Yes, I managed to get water into my machine, but only when I tried to pack it up with water in the tank -- ... Under normal conditions, water just doesn't leak into the machine.

Extremely strange that your Remstars had problems. Are you sure your DME didn't give you duds in the first place?
