Canadians ordering on line. I have questions.

Post by SelfSeeker » Sat Sep 23, 2006 5:06 pm

I have a few questions.

I now that duty and taxes are not applicable for medical supplies, if they are added, they can be reimbursed, at least that is what Canada customs told me.

I plan on ordering from CPAP.com. They use a postal service for Canada orders. How much will a machine cost for it to clear customs.. I am concerned about the fee to go through customs. The broker fees. How much was the shipping fees that were charged.

Do you have any recent experience, you would like to share with me.

Thanks in advance.

the GST code is 57 for medical supplies, if you don't pay gst you don't pay any other tax either. Better to mark the package than have to write a letter and get re-imbursed.
re broker fees, you could phone UPS to see if they can give you an idea re this cost.

If you can get CPAP.COM to send it through the mail, instead of UPS, there are no custom brokerage fees. I was charged custom fees and gst for a mask, even though the package was clearly marked exempt medical device (gst code 57). I submitted the form to get the fees/taxes back and was reimbursed. I live in Calgary, so it went through Vancouver office. I guess they were having a bad day. The only products that CPAP.COM cannot send to Canada are ResMed product orders.

Guest: I was told by customs to include a copy of the prescription on the outside of the box.

THanks for the number 57

capt, I was wondering about brokage fees even if it went through the mail, I remember once paying about $5 admin fees for things that went through the US mail system. I will call the post office to make sure.

capt how much were the custom fees?

I do not want any big surprises.

Yes there is problem of ResMed products leaving the USA. I like to know that story.

charges

Post by Bella » Mon Sep 25, 2006 5:18 am

The machine should be duty and GST exempt. If it is GST exempt, no PST will be assessed (if it is indeed applicable to medical supplies). If no duty and taxes are owing, Canada Post does not assess the $5.00 handling fee. So if everything goes right, there should be not border charges at all.

With couriers, as others have noted, it is a different story. Service charges could be $30.00 or so, and the duty and tax may not be assessed as correctly.

Thanks Bella.

I was not sure about the $5.00 handling fee, and if it was dependent on the cost of the items shipped. Good to know they do not charge the handling fee, if no GST.

I stay away from couriers, because of the high broker fees on anything being shipped.

Yes Customs Canada told me there is no duty OR GST for medical supplies, no matter where the machine is made.

I realize this is an old thread, but does anyone know why Resmed products can't be bought via cpap.com?

Thanks!

This is weird timing. I posted a message this morning about Canadian shopping with cpap.com and came back and it wasn't here but I found this one. Sooo, I am not sure why this one is up here if it is old or whether someone else is interested in the topic so I will take a chance and say that I bought a mask part from cpap.com and was told that they don't use UPS for Canadian shipments and always use the postal service. It was a $17. shipping and handling charge (still worth it) and no other fees (except exchange).

My reason for posting this morning was to cheer that my insurance company paid for the item. yay again.
