Holland America staff ignorance re CPAP usage
Just read a story, linked below, about a Holland America cruise line "officer" denying an 80-something year old man transfer from the floating coronavirus "Petri dish," Holland America's "Zaandam" to the ship Rotterdam "because [he] uses a machine to help him breathe during sleep and combat snoring....

Re: Pressure high at start
Hi Usman. Welcome to the club. Can't help you re issues with your machine, but as for sleep, try using the "ramp" feature until you get used to CPAPing. I did and it helped me make the adjustment. Now, I no longer need a ramp. To adjust your machine yourself (most of us do), search the Internet for ...

Re: Accidentally fell asleep with mask on, but didn't turn CPAP
I once fell asleep not only with the machine not on, but with no hose connected, either. I have also had the mask on with no hose connected and turned on the machine. I knew instantly something wasn't right.

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Well, SH scores such as events. How in the world do people get down to an AHI of 1 or 2? Rhetorical in part, but I am genuinely mystified. Also, if it is SWJ, why is it becoming more frequent? Probably not something that can be answered without a fair dose of speculation.

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Huh, hadn't heard of an ASV machine. I have new insurance so maybe I can work with a doc and lab that do more than merely count apneas. Thanks, Jas!

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Knightsleeper, I tried a collar I bought from CVS (no one else around here carries them, seemingly). It was 3.5 inches, which was too much. Felt like my neck was being stretched out. I slept reasonably well on my back, but it didn't work well while sleeping on my side. Took it back and ordered a 3 i...

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
For the record, my doctor was not at all bothered by an AHI over 5. He said something to the effect that, "well, it's better than your sleep test." I don't plan to go back to him, not just because of that comment. He is highly rated by patients, but I just didn't get a sense that he was that focused...

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
And thanks to everyone else who responded. Dadbar1, I've dropped 17 pounds in the last five weeks (thanks in part to that nasty cold going around). My goal was to hit 200 by my 65th birthday in July. With seven pounds to go, I'm now shooting for 190. :) I'm presuming (and hoping) that will help cont...

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Thanks Norwitchterrior and zoocrewphoto. I tried the APAP setting about a year ago and was getting AHIs in double digits so I went back to the CPAP setting. As I mentioned in an earlier post today, it seems the blockage occurs when I exhale rather than inhale, and pushing out a certain threshold of ...

CPAP and a mouthpiece?
So my journey continues. I don't know all the medical jargon, so I'll just use plain English. Since I haven't employed any external devices (is a wedge pillow a device?) to keep me off my back while sleeping, my events - obstructives, hypops, occasional centrals - continue to cluster during supine s...

Re: a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Principally obstructives and centrals. They seem to take turns being the issue. Obstructives seem to be the key flag for supine sleeping, because the epiglottis (?) still seems to close while breathing. My pressure is setting at a permanent 13.5. Can't post charts presently as I'm away from my deskt...

a question for those consistently under 5 AHI
Hi all. So a few months back, I went for my one-year checkup with my sleepy doc. I dutifully took a digital version of my SleeyHead chart showing my "changes to prescription settings" that I had made over the months (which of course caused him to harrumph a bit) and wanted to talk about my continuin...

Re: "night terrors" and CPAP therapy
Hi Gryphon. Thanks for the questions. I'm already at 13.5 on a Dreamstation. I've attempted higher pressure settings, but they just keep me awake. Seems that the key is to avoid rolling onto my back, and there are ways to try to minimize that but, alas, they only work marginally.
Cheers,
MC
