Nose irritation with pillows

Post by EdNerd » Mon Jan 01, 2018 1:05 pm

I have a Resmed Mirage Liberty hybrid mask. I'm using the medium pillows. The left side is irritating the inside of my nostril, like it's pushing up too high. I'm going to try the small pillows tonight. But it looks like the height is the same, so the change may not help.

Anyone have suggestions for relief?
Ed

Try a light application of lanolin on the inside of the nostril, sold as Lanilo, usually in stores like WalMart or Target in the baby aisle as a breastfeeding salve.

I have used Ayr saline nasal gel with good results.

I prefer Lansinoh lanolin - https://www.target.com/p/lansinoh-hpa-l ... nk=sametab. Use a light coating. This is a single ingredient product (lanolin).

While the Ayr gel is good, they throw a lot of stuff into it - Water, glycerin, methyl gluceth-10, propylene glycol, PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone, aloe barbadensis leaf juice (aloe vera gel), carbomer, sodium chloride, xanthan gum, glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, potassium sorbate, sodium hydroxide, diazolidinyl urea, glycine soja (soybean) oil, geranium maculatum oil, tocopheryl acetate, citric acid, sodium benzoate, sodium sulfite, blue 1.

I would think the smaller pillows will go further up in your nostrils. How do the medium pillows fit? Are they pushing up inside the nostrils? The flange of the pillows should seal on the outside of the nostrils. A proper fit/adjustment will barely touch the inside of the nostrils. In fact, the pillows should not touch the mucus membrane inside the nostrils.

For immediate relief, try some sort of lanolin (NEVER use Vaseline) as recommended by roberts975. An alternative brand that is also good is Lansinoh - it is used by nursing mothers to minimize irritation (physical, not mental) from nursing.
When I was using the Liberty a few years ago, I, too, found the height of the nasal pillows to be problematical. The distance from the mask pillow to my nares was a bit too short and could not be easily adjusted. Consequently, I switched to an Innomed Hybrid mask - it is similar to the Liberty but the pillows are significantly more adjustable. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/RespCa ... -Mask.html
A short video with sizing and fitting information can be found either with the link above or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3saxr_ZR-pg
Another video review showing the features as well as some differences with Liberty can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBoVis-OStY
Personally, I found the flexibility and adjustability to be very important. When I moved on it was to a straight nasal pillow as I had difficulty with the seal (of all FFM types) around the face.
