The church key works on thin metal lids--just enough to allow air inside--
careful not to break the glass!
I use a butter knife, under the bottom of the lid, to break the vacuum. Running hot water over the lid works many times. Jim

Done that---burned my hand.
Putting the jar, lid down, in a shallow dish of hot water
warms the metal lid enough to expand it, without burning you.
A couple strips of vetwrap helps get a really good grip.

I just run the hot water oner the lid (fast) so as not to expand the glass too. Jim

My dominant hand is exceptionally sensitive to heat,
due to a bad scald on that entire arm when I was a toddler.
[[[Scarring was limited to heavy freckling, thanks to Army docs at Ft. Robinson]]]
I do not leave the lid in the hot water more than a few seconds.

About a year ago, my wife bought some "universal" jar opener. It universally didn't work on just about anything!
SO, my "job" is still safe for the time being......
LOL, that reminds me of what my favorite jar opener is. . . . my husband!!!

House trick here... take 2-3 rubber bands, twist them together, place over jar lid.... provides plenty of grip for even the stiffest lid. If torsion strength were an issue, I'd think about a rubber strap wrench too... the used to sell them on tv, now you can find them in just about any auto or hardware store.

Buy two, it's the equal opposite reaction that's required.... Jim

Being able to unscrew the cap means you have to be able to hold the jar.

My quick tip is to tap the edge of the jar lid a couple of times with the back (dull) edge of a knife or the side of a heavy spoon. That usually releases the vacuum seal.

Airwolf's house trick with the rubber bands is one my mother relied on, and then passed the jar off to me to open if she couldn't, lol! I ask my son, because he has larger hands, so more torque (I think) than mine.

My favourite tool to help with twisting off jar lids is the rubber dome opener, like this sample:
https://www.ebay.com/p/Set-of-2-Aronson ... 1465354188
It is useful on any number of sizes of lid or screw top. I found mine at my local grocery store in the utensils aisle.

I haven't tried the Lee Valley opener, mentioned above by CRMW, but all their gadgets are good quality, as I have learned by experience. Info on it here: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page ... 0733,40734

There is a material that you can purchase called dycem which is excellent for opening jars.

Yep...but I don't even need a thread...my husband and I were just talking yesterday about how she was most likely turning over in her grave because of how her beloved Nats were playing.
Every time I see a stat from them or a highlight or a mention...I think of her.
To be honest there's probably not a day that goes by now that baseball season is here that I don't think about her at least once.
She loved her baseball.
