Yes, how come you can buy a CPAP mask on-line without a script? Thank you! Bill
This is the wrong question. The correct question is, "Why the hell is a prescription required to buy a CPAP mask?"

They afraid minors will start huffing CPAP masks?
Ditto that. I'm having a hard time imagining why/how someone would "abuse" a CPAP machine much less masks and hoses. Could you imagine the absudity of throwing people in jail for selling/buying a CPAP mask??

Bad news is to buy in parts makes the masks 2-3x more expensive.

I bought a Air Fit F10 FF for $149 at Breathe Easy CPAP. That seemed like a fair price. It said no scrip needed... Bill

Just as an FYI, in California, Xpaps are considered 'dangerous medical devices'. (no I'm not kidding). It's the only state in the country where you are potentially running the dark edge of the law selling used xpaps. FDA does not claim jurisdiction over used equipment.

This is silly, It's not because they are worried people will start huffing CPAP masks. The FDA is worried, let's say for instance a person buys the wrong size or type of mask, it leaks. The CPAP machine can't sense the events properly and the user ends up with a stroke or worse, succumbs to apnea.

After the plethora of people that have reported that their DME slapped the wrong mask on them, without measuring, I'd say that your allegation is unfounded in reality.

I dunno, it was a for instance situation. For instance, In reality a pharmacy may mistakenly fill the prescription with the wrong pills even if the medication has no potential for abuse. It's still regulated by the FDA.

It was most likely the CPAP lobby that paid off Congressmen to support this restriction. You need a prescription to buy eye glasses too. But you can go on line to several sources and order them.

In other words, you're guessing... which is ok, as long as it's presented as a guess, and not some statement of fact.

Ha Ha Ha, the FDA like all government agencies, only care about drawing money from the taxpayers, and of course the drug providers and medical equipment providers, your health is of little concern. Jim

Yes it was a guess as to one of the reasons why CPAP needs a prescription and regulated by FDA, and supposedly restricted used CPAP sales in California.

Maybe some very smart people on this forum makes it seem like fitting a mask and using an auto cpap is so easy that nothing life threatening could possibly go wrong. By the way, I cringe at these threads and posts about buying this here over there without a prescription because I'm only guessing that there will come a day when someone in charge of something makes it harder for me to get my supplies and information on using my equipment.

It's only air.
What diabetics do every day....much, much more dangerous IMHO than what we do with a little air from a cpap machine.

If someone isn't comfortable doing anything without their medical care team's input...then simply don't do it.
But if diabetics can learn to manage their diabetes with insulin injections....we can learn how to manage a little air if we want to.

That's because a cpap is FAR safer (in the life threatening scheme of things) than many other things. Say... diabetics self dosing with insulin.

There's nothing you can do with a cpap that will cause more harm than NOT HAVING IT. Or an apap.

You *could* hyperventilate yourself with a bilevel, but it's one of those things that any even slightly sane person would then say "oh, yeah, i shouldn't have changed THAT setting".

Controlling diabetes is way harder than using cpap.
Ten year old children are trusted with insulin.
And yet ADULTS are not trusted with directions on using an air pump.
Yes, it is SO about the MONEY!

I'm not sure I understand the replies to my posts, Do you think there should not be prescriptions on CPAP? Sounds good to me. Which aisle are they going on? :)
We as patients are left to manage our prescriptions all the time, like you said, Diabetes, also many prescriptions are written "taken as needed."

Doesn't matter what I think but there are parts of the world where you can just go into a store of some sort and buy a machine and a mask and not have anything to do with a doctor. No RX required.
Here in the USA...if RX wasn't required then insurance companies would likely say "so sorry charlie...we won't pay for cpap stuff".
But then maybe if insurance wasn't involved the darn price would come down and be more reasonable.
