Complete Frustration
I have had sleep apnea for several years and have been through my fair share of masks. I currently use the amara view mask, which works to a point as long as I can get myself to stay in one position. That is where the problem comes in, I am 295lb so it is very hard for me to get comforable at night. When I wake up in the morning normally the only thing still left on the bed is me. My doctors tell me I have to train myself to lay in one position or on my back and that is not happening. I am sure I can not be the only one having his problem. It is very frustrating wake up every day feeling like you have not sleep. On top of dealing with the sleep apnea I do have bi polar disorder which basically seems to have my doctors guessings as to which problem is causing the worst of which sysptoms. Anyone have any feedback, advice, or anything they would like to share.

Re: Complete Frustration
What possible rationale are your MDs using to suggest you stay in one place all night? And do they not know that on your back is the worst because it provokes MORE apneas?

Re: Complete Frustration
What is it about the Amara View that does not work if you toss and turn?
How is your bed uncomfortable? Sagging, too firm? I understand you are heavy.
Bipolar symptoms may become less severe with improved CPAP therapy and longer sleep time.
I toss and turn as well, this morning when the alarm went off the tube was once around my neck however the mask was still on. I don't use a hose hanger because it's to restricting and I use a ResMed AirFit F20, because vents are in elbow away from face and pillow.
Learning how to sleep with a mask and hose is kinda like learning how not to fall out of the bed at night. I have these automatic non stressful things I can do while in sleepy fog similar to moving away from edge of bed.

- Itchy nose, pull mask up from bottom and rub
- mask riding up, pull it down
- mask vent blowing into pillow or blanket, move blanket, pillow or turn head a bit

Re: Complete Frustration
What kind of sleeping pillow do you use? I have found a flat firm pillow helps avoid sinking into the pillow, thus dislodging the mask. You may even want to get a cheap foam pillow, look up pictures of some of the CPAP pillows with cutouts to accomodate a mask, and start whacking. Sleeping on the edge of the pillow may help too. If you are able to use a hose hanging system, it can prevent leaks from the hose tugging on the mask when changing position. If the mask is leaking from shifting flesh when changing positions, these tips probably won't be your answer. Are you using a full face mask out of necessity?

Re: Complete Frustration
How long have you been using CPAP? In my experience, there is some relearning that takes place over time. And, it can be frustrating.

Sorry, I see it's several years. Me too, and I'm not completely comfortable, but I do thing I sleep in pretty much the same position most of the night. That might just be mostly the way it is.

Re: Complete Frustration
Although you have tried other masks, I think it would be easier to try another mask than to retrain yourself to sleep in one position. I find staying in one spot introduces a whole new batch of problems like a sore hip and back.
BTW, I don't see how being bipolar figures into this. What does it have to do with sleep position or mask fit?

Re: Complete Frustration
I sleep on a firm pillow, I have looked at the cpap pillows but have figured out which one would work best. The full face mask seems to be the one that annoyed me the least. When I first got the Amara view things started of well but as started to become more restless I found the mask to be more annoying.kteague wrote: ↑Fri Mar 09, 2018 4:48 pmWhat kind of sleeping pillow do you use?
