First night with APAP after 15 years with CPAP

Post by johngroneman » Fri Mar 09, 2018 11:31 am

I am brand new to this forum and I just had my first night with APAP with heated humidifier after about 15 years using CPAP with no humidifier. My new equipment is APEX iCH Auto CPAP with built in heated humidifier. I slept 8.5 hours. Woke up feeling pretty good. What is most significant to me is that I briefly woke up a couple of times and I was sleeping on my back. I was NEVER able to sleep on my back using a CPAP.

Side note: Humidifier heat level set at halfway. Used PVA (pressure relief on exhalation) set at minimum level. I did not change the min/max pressure (4/20) or starting pressure (4). I did not use ramp.

My index was: AI:0 HI:2 SI:0 which sounds like an incredible success! Questions:

1-Is this index as good as I think it is?
2-is there a way to get more info out of my machine such as therapy pressure utilized during session?
3-is there software that works with my equipment?

Thanks for any comments or advice!

Most people use sleepyhead to view their sleep data (see links below). I don't know if it works with your machine.
What was your previous CPAP pressure?

I’ll check out sleepyhead. My original pressure was 14, but that was from a study done 15 years ago. I weighed 300 lbs when I had my sleep study and have lost 120 lbs putting me at 180 lbs now. With the massive weight loss, over time I have adjusted my pressure down. It was 11 for the last year or so. No new sleep studies done, I just changed the pressure myself (I know I’m not supposed to do that, but 14 became unbearable).

SleepyHead will NOT work with the Apex machines. So don't bother.

I have no idea if there is any software available to show more details or what level of detail the Apex machine might even show.
You might go to their home page and poke around to see if there is any software you can download.

Is there any chance that this machine is on a rental basis through your insurance company? If it is, I would sure return it and get a data-capable machine that is compatible with the free Sleepyhead software. It could be a big advantage for you.

I purchased the machine so it's what I have to work with for a while. I'm ok with only getting the index summary if I can't get more data, just thought it would be cool to see more. This is the first time in about 15 years I've been able to get any data from a machine so I'm pretty happy about that. Knowing what I do now, I will probably buy a machine that works with software in the future. I'm just super happy to finally have an APAP instead of a CPAP!

There is probably some software somewhere
Here's the home page
http://www.apexmedicalcorp.com/index.ph ... lobal&n=66

But then I just spotted that the apneaboard.com forum says they have the software and will send it to you
http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread ... -Available
You will need to register and be logged in to request it via email though...otherwise you can't see the instructions if you aren't logged in.

The efficacy reporting seems to be extremely limited - http://www.apexmedicalusa.com/assets/ne ... elp_GB.pdf

I did find the software from the apneaboard.com forum. Thanks! Installed and it's working. It gives me rudimentary information, but I was mainly interested in what my pressure is doing throughout the night and what events were happening. looks like the software will work great for me. Also found out the maximum pressure I had last night was 8 cm, which is a good bit lower than where my cpap was set (11 cm). Very pleased with switching to APAP.

welcome to the forum. and excellent work on the weight loss!!

no, we here don't worry about changing our own pressure. we figure it's OUR machine and OUR health, so we do what is necessary!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Thanks! I downloaded the software and reviewed the data from last night. The highest pressure was 8, so previously having my CPAP at 11 was apparently too high.
