HDM Z1 Solar Charging

Post by marksfps » Tue Mar 20, 2018 10:14 am

Hey, new to the forum, I tried to search this subject and couldn't find anything.
I have (and love) my Z1 auto. I use it for travel and for camping. I have 3 batteries for it but wasn't to make an extended canoe trip. I am trying to find a solar charging option. I found a blog that suggests this solar charger
https://www.amazon.com/EnerPlex-Ultra-l ... B00FPHKOPY

However, this charger charges at an output of 5v at 6w. According to HDM, and what I've observed, To charge these batteries you need to connect to the power shell and the z1.
So my assumption is that to properly charge this, you need to connect to the 15vdc input to the powershell.

I did found this charger, that can output 15v
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0785WCZG7/re ... SAbE48NJGR
but didn't know if this would work, and how long it would take to charge.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks in advance!

What size batteries? What part of country are you in?

It's been a while since I have really researched all of this. For the price of charger you posted I would look at powerfilm rollable solar panel. Amazon has it for like $200 and it's 14 watts vs the 7 you posted. I like the rollable ones because I think they are waterproof vs water resistant. That's important to me because if you camping or traveling you can leave it out all the time and not worry about rain.

I know there are charts online as well that will tell you average sun in your area which is also an important consideration when figuring out your set up. Ideally the more wattage panel the better to decrease charge time because you can't know how much sun you will get on any given day.

Ok, thanks for the reply, but as far as I can tell, that charger only outputs 5vdc. I need it to output 15v with at least 30w to charge one of the batteries in 8 hours. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

If it only charges 5 volt dc, you will have to mount it very high in the air to get 5 volts to run into a 15 volt battery. I don't think they make a pole that high!   Jim

Hello. I'd like to start out by telling you that I know almost nothing about batteries and chargers.

I also have a Z1. They have no solar chargers at this point....which makes the battery option almost useless...especially for 'off the grid' use. I'm putting down every machine spec I can find that might help you suggest an option.

machine specs: approx 300charge/discharge cycle, 30w AC supply input range, power consumption 20-35w

Best Regards, Debbie

Many of the small portable solar panels are going to be 5 volt. Made to charge phones and cameras.

You are going to have to look into a specialty market. Probably a solar panel and separate charging unit. Many of these are "12 volt" systems, but put out close to 15 volts.

Harbor Freight has a 25 watt panel/controller for $70. You are probably going to have to get a unit that is larger than you really want to actually charge the batteries.
