How long for Auto-off to turn CPAP off?

Post by Robear » Sun Apr 08, 2018 1:14 pm

A couple of nights ago I turned on Auto-on and Auto-off for the 1st time. Auto-on works fine. I put my mask on & 3-4 seconds later machine is blowing & I feel the air. But when I wake up in the morning & take the mask off, it doesn't turn off. So I manually turn it off. Seems like a heck of a "Large Leak" if it's just blowing air into the room.

Am I just being too impatient? How long does it take to turn off?

I've re-checked setup & Auto-on and Auto-off are both turned on.

Respironics machines take a full 60 seconds to turn off automatically...and it's a long 60 seconds it seems like in the middle of the night.
I use the auto on all the time but I prefer to push the button for turning it off.
It doesn't hurt anything to let it blow but it can be noisy and bed partner might get annoyed.

After this subject came up the other day, I decided to try auto off. Maybe my machine is defective, but my “60 seconds” is over 10 minutes (long enough for an extended bathroom break). Glad I’m not the only Dreamstarion user with this issue!

Are you sure that Auto OFF...is set to ON?

If it is and it still takes forever it might be a combination of the pressure you are using and the mask that you use.
Sometimes with some masks at the lower pressures the machine can't sense that a human is no longer attached.
I have it happen with my ResMed machine too. Just something I learned to make a habit years ago....auto on works great but auto off doesn't always work so great or takes a long time and it's just easier to push the button to turn it off.

I have had the issue with a ResMed S9 when I was using a nasal pillow P10 mask when the machine was set up for the N10 Nasal mask. It wouldn't auto shut off. However, with a the mask setting matching the actual mask used, it auto shuts off in about 5-10 seconds. So the first thing I would do is check your Clinical Menu setup and make sure the mask used setting matches the actual mask used. Most masks come with an instruction manual that tells you what setting to use with each type of common machine.

I double checked to be sure I had set it correctly 😊 as I do have senior moments. It’s not a big deal—easy enough to hit the off button, but I may take a look at the pressure next time I have to get up. I’m a curious person.

It's a known issue with S9 and AirSense machines with some nasal pillow masks and lower pressures.
It's even mentioned in the manual that auto off doesn't work so great sometimes with some nasal pillow masks especially and it isn't necessarily related to mask choice on the machine.
I have used an S9 and AirSense (currently) and mask choice on the menu is definitely pillows and the machine simply will not turn off if I take the mask off at the pressure I use. Now if I used a higher pressure it does but why would I want to do that?

Also...Respironics machines don't have a mask type choice in the menu like the ResMed machines.

+1000 -- I always turn off my ResMed manually, and I have a resident at the LTC who insists I turn her DreamStation off manually as well. When it's so quiet with the mask on, that breeze from the machine can sound like a wind tunnel!

Auto-off not working is not a big deal. It's easy enough to simply manually turn CPAP off, but last night Auto-ON wouldn't work. It wouldn't turn ON . . . yes, Auto-on IS turned on. My pressure range is 10-20, 90% is usually 11-12.

Happens sometimes with the Respironics machines when people are more shallow breathers especially with full face masks.
Next time try 3 or 4 big deep breaths and see if that will trigger it.

If it still doesn't want to work properly it might be having a sensor issue where it just can't sense your breathing well enough to know you are attached.

It's no big deal for me.
Also at the bottom of my list for suggested improvements.

Reminds me of a story a guy I worked with me told abour his dad. They had a small farm, dad sent his two sons out to plow the field with the tractor. The boys asked if the tractor had enough oil and gas. Dad said make sure the oil is full, the gas will take care of it's self. The boys filled the oil, and out to the field they went, just getting it done.

It got hot in the sun, low and behold, at the farthest end of the field the tractor died, out of gas. Dad was right, the gas did take care of it's self. The boys spent the heat of the day carrying gas to the tractor, lesson learned. Jim

When I went to bed last night it took almost 30 seconds of repeated quick deep breaths to trigger it. If that's what it takes, Auto-on will probably be useless for me in case of power outage (or cat turnoff).

If my CPAP is "having a sensor issue" with a simple issue like whether I'm breathing or not, how can I trust all the info that the sensors are (supposedly) gathering? I can't imagine trying to get a "1000 mile checkup", considering that it took 71 days to get a heated hose which was recommended when I got CPCP 2 1/2 years ago. Incidentally, "Setup" says that "heated tube humidification" is off (& I can't get it to turn on).

Respironics machines are notoriously sluggish, whether to turn on with auto on, respond to breathing events, or turn off with the auto off.

My experience with the ones I had was similar to yours, I felt like I was trying to suck start a jet engine.

It's not that thre's a sensor issue, it's just that the programming is not responsive, for whatever reason.

As to trusting the data, look at the airflow, and the pressure, that's the only data that the machine captures, everything else is derived from that. Can you see your breathing when you zoom in on the airflow chart? does the pressure move around? put your ear up against the machine and listen, can you hear the motor speeding up and slowing down as you breath in and out?

My Airsense turns on quickly with my small p10,
but failed to turn on with an F20--even with the mask type set correctly.
FWIW, Goofproof may be right.
Resmed "phoned it in"!
Maybe they owe us an upgrade . . .
While they are at it, how about making the dimmable screen user-adjustable?
