AirrSense 10 Humidiifier Question

Post by Rubyslipperss » Sat Apr 21, 2018 6:26 am

Due to mobility problems, I have not been able to get out to get any Distilled Water. For 5 nights I have used bottled drinking water but don’t want to run the chance of damaging my CPAP. During 11 years of therapy, I have never used humidity with my therapy and am not sure I like it anyway.

If I turn off the humidifier but keep the water chamber iin the CPAP, can I leave it empty or do I need to keep water in it? Will it hurt having non distilled water in it if it is not turned on? I really don’t want to risk any damage to the machine.

Thanks.

Bottled water won't damage anything.
Worst case scenario...maybe a little mineral buildup in the water chamber that is easily cleaned with vinegar or lemon juice.
Distilled water doesn't have those minerals and that's why it is advised that we use distilled...less clean up but the deposits themselves if they happen don't hurt a thing.

Now you can turn the humidifier off if you wish and not have any water in that water chamber and it won't hurt a thing.

FWIW...I used bottled water several nights last week...ran out of distilled and kept forgetting it when I went to town.
No big deal...and no build up on the water chamber either.
But if it had happened I know I can clean it easily enough with lemon juice (don't particularly care for vinegar smell).

I was told by the DME for my airsense 10 that if you don't use distilled you can use bottled and in a pinch tap. Using bottled or tap will not mess up your machine you would just need to clean out the chamber more often. For bottled I would stay away from any thing thats says mineral water.

Thanks! You have put my mind at ease. I think I will lower the humidity tonight and see if I like it better.

Thanks again. :D

The *ONLY* reason that the manuals in the US say "use distilled water" is to avoid mineral buildup. just wash it out with vinegar or citric acid now and then to clean that.

In Europe, where distilled water is harder to find, the manuals say "use water".

If you don't want to use water, turn of the humidifier and leave it dry... that's what I do.

Any time I see someone say "I was told by my DME", I want to scream.

There are few hives of ignorance and villainy worse than DMEs.. MAYBE used car dealerships... no... DMEs are worse.

LOL Yeah, I am quickly discovering that. I was basically told to leave the settings alone and so far I am OKAY with them. But come the hot/humid Houston weather, I expect I will be a disobedient girl and change them around!! Shame on me! :D

No, shame on THEM for treating you like you're a moron and aren't smart enough to adjust things to make it better for yourself.

For the most pArt, yes. You can trust most DMEs about as much as you can trust a used car salesman.

But not in this case.

Just because a DME says it, doesn't mean you should pay ANY attention to it.

In this case, "in a pinch" tap... You're fine to use tap water *all the time*.

One can buy an optional matching side cover if one decides not to use the humidifier feature. I paid less than CAD$20 for one in case I need to travel without the humidifier.

If your tap water reeks of chlorine, just leave it in an open container for a day or so.
Or you can run it through a filter designed to remove chlorine.

One can simply turn the humidifier off, and leave the tank on there, too.
