New ICON Auto staying warm/hot during the day

Post by meathead013 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 2:19 pm

I have a brand new Fisher and Paykel ICON Auto machine and I've used it for two nights. Here is the product listing on cpap.com where I bought it: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... chine.html

I got up this morning at 7AM and it is now 4PM. The water container is still warm, the area on the back right next to the power cord is warm, and if I lift the machine (straight up, of course) and feel the bottom near the power cord, it feels warm almost hot to the touch

When I called cpap.com to see if this was normal they said that the water chamber is well insulated and will remain warm for quite a while, so yes they said, this is normal. I made that call at about 12PM and I can't see any difference between now and when I checked it at about 11AM.

It certainly feels like its using electricity and keeping the warming plate on considering the bottom is very warm to the touch nine hours later. This concerns me for the obvious reason that 1) it would use constant electricity when I'm not actually using it, and even more importantly 2) that it would wear out the machine MUCH faster.

So I'm asking other ICON Auto owners if their machine is like this. If possible, allow at least nine hours to pass after using the machine to see if the bottom is very warm so we can see if we can duplicate my experience.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

Many appliances now days draw current all the time. If not remotes don't work, It is poor thinking, most XPAPs draw current and that means heat. If you want a sure cure, use a power strip with a switch. With XPAPs it has one good thing the warmth keeps moisture out of the electronics. Jim

In older appliances, the heat attracted cockroaches.

yes of course. and thats a good point about keeping moisture out of the electronics.

but the bottom near the cord entry is literally almost hot. like i can keep my hand on it but it is almost uncomfortable to do so.

hopefully on monday i will get a definitive answer that it was designed to do that.

Unplug it and see if it cools down faster.

F&P indicates this is normal.

They also said there is a two-year warranty on this product. i would prefer it were three years or more but if there really is an excessive heat problem the unit will probably fail within that two year timeframe.

I hope they're right. This thing cost me $450 bucks with no insurance reimbursement, which is a lot for a disabled man on social security as my only income

Problem solved for $5 to $10. Piece of Mind, Priceless!

Thanks for letting us know what F&P said. It adds to our knowledge of products.
Good luck with your machine and the warranty.
